There seems to be some controversy regarding when this service should be completed. The owner’s manual states one thing and the dealer advises that the factory has made revisions. Does anyone know what the current FACTORY recommendations are?

my understanding is that the factory is uniformly recommending 3 years or 30K miles on belts. but i challenge you to get a service manager to tell you that with a straight face - 'cuz 3 years and, say 7500 miles is an insane interval (imo) to change your belts out. they did this because (a) they weren't consistent about having time intervals previously in NA and (b) the newfangled pre-owned warranty needed to have hard metrics like this, and they chose a metric that effectively guaranteed no failure.

i've talked to a few techs who still think five years or 30K is very reasonable on these belts - they're reinforced; they're not garbage.

So, I'll assume that its your understanding that a dealer would be unable to offer an additional full warranty on a 2000 360 w/4K miles unless it had the 15K service which included belts.

all except the 15K bit. the belts are at 30K.

they won't let you buy the extended full-bore warranty unless all your services are up to date and by the book. hence, they had to make sure the "book" was complete and thorough, and thus came up with this 3 year deal, when everybody is pretty damn sure 5 years is overkill ;).

DISCLAIMER: if you **** up your engine, it's not my problem ;). i'm not a ferrari mechanic, i just play one on the internet!

'all except the 15K bit. the belts are at 30K'. Sorry still don't understand. For me to get a full factory warrant on the 2000 car w/4K mi., what services are necessary?

the 15K service does not include timing belts. timing belts are generally the 30K service.

as to what you'll need done in order to get the pre-owned warranty, that will vary car-by-car and you need to ask your dealer.

Anyone know how much the extended warranty costs?

    Costs can vary by dealer.

And the pre-owned warr does include NEW timing belts.
Compression and leak-down are checked too.

FoSF quoted me $7K for one additional year! If it was for another three years would hav been worth it.

    PCH,

If your car's engine serial number is less than 60796 then I would worry about the CAM Timing Variator and ask my dealer about it. Read my post earlier on this subject. If for some reason something goes wrong and you have not changed the belt as prescribed then you are looking at significantly more expense than the timing belt replacement.

    Cheers,

Regarding costs for an extended warranty ..... First off ... there's almost no independent insurers selling policies for Ferrari's .... I searched just about everywhere ..... however, I did find one company, www.exoticwarranty.com that will write Ferrari's .... they quoted me a policy that includes things like timing belt failure and appears pretty comprehensive .... $ 9k for 4 years (unlimited mileage)..... they also offer 1, 2 & 3 year policies. I bought my 2000 Maranello recently .... but have yet to decide on a warranty because I'm concerned about the issues raised in this thread .... will the policy be honored if I don't change belts every 3 years (mine are already a year over due according to the new "unwritten" rule) .... etc., etc. I wonder if the cost of this policy is worth spending a lot more on factory spec'ed maintenance ... something that really doesn't need to be kept to this accellerated schedule. My manual states 30k on the T-belt change ... which is reasonable ... I'll probably change these at 5 years just to be safe .... but I still question which applies from the insurers prespective. The original manual specs (30k/unlimited time) or whatever Ferrari dreams up at some point ... Would hate to pay $9k, then have something really expensive break ... only to discover they won't cover it because of something like belts not being changed according to the "new" rules.....

Would love to hear everyone's spin on this.......

speedball - you'll need to talk to the warranty company about what's expected pre-warranty. you'll also want to make sure they're "for real". each year we read about aftermarket warranty company X and Y failing or closing and leaving their policy holders in a ditch by the side of the road.

$7K for one year of warranty is really quite insane. remember, to GET that one year of warranty YOU are likely going to have to spend $3K to $8K in service on the car getting it up to "FNA standards" at which point nothing is likely to break over the next year.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but as another poster on this thread mentioned, do your homework before you buy an aftermarket warranty. The link in the quote above is dead, which likely means they went belly up (and left people with worthless paper instead of actual warranties when they did).
