Sorry to say that the new software seems a lot slower than the old software. It is taking about 50% longer to download a thread than it used to. This is for normal length threads without any images too.

Also I have tried uploading an image using 'manage attachments' and choosing a local file on my hard drive. This doesn't seem to work. Any ideas why not?

Probably becuase you're doing it incorrectly.

Manage Attachments>Browse>(Select item you want)>Add this file> All Done

Chances are you are not hitting "Add this file".

Very Very slow for me as well. It's painful to come here and browse now...even if it finally has the proper top to bottom message structure. :)

Major browser cache issues with me. Refreshes are not working properly. I'm getting pretty sick of hitting the Reload button.
Oh, and yes, its slow for me too. I'm on cable modem right now and earlier tried via 56k connection while on the road and it was futile.

And this time its not my computer because I just took this one out of the box.

    Cheers

I haven't done much of anything to optimize the speeds. So there is much potential there. Speed will only get better.

One reason is the other board was HTML based, so it didn't have to generate anything. The downside for that was the file locking errors when trying to post because that's when all of the generation was happening.

Basically, you're hitting the Db on here with every action you take. I'm sure just doing basic tweaks will get the speeds closer to the old board. One thing at a time though.

I'm on ADSL and the speed difference isn't noticable.

Hey Rob, still have that PHP-based redirection script I sent you? It feels like my site is significantly faster to redirect then yours- try it out? If you don't have it email me.

Also, with all these complaints about speed (seems fine to me)- maybe it's your host?

I doubt it's the host, because the same server on the old board is on.

Please send me the script. What does it do? Will it work on vB3?

Also, please let me know what configs you did to optimize your speed.

I just disabled the redirection, so let me know if that speeds anything up. Someone at vB told me to do that to speed things up.

    Kenny,

There is no need for that kind of language. I just stated an opinion, If you don't
like it Ignore it. I'm trying to be a good citizen on this chatline don't get me started.

Pretty much, its PHP based so everything that isn't stored on the site won't be on the site when filling in a "field" portion- for example, if you sign up for amazon.com and fill out all of your personal information and try to click back because you entered the wrong birthdate- all the fields are clear.

OK, I just put a limit of one image per post. This will keep all images displayed and inline. In the future I will work on allowing more images per post displayed inline like the old board.

    Is this acceptable James? :)

I'm very sorry but what kind of reaction would you expect from your post? Let's take this to the PM's (Private Messages) and keep it off the chatline.

Try using Netscape rather than MS Internet Explorer. Much Faster

Mark - Why is that? - I just tried it and it seemed 10 times faster! :) :) - Is it something to do with IE wanting to load the whole page before making it viewable?

I really don't know for sure but that would be my guess. The old software was the other way around for me, it would cause Netscape to freeze.

Interesting about Netscape - in my case, closing the Netscape Browser made me wince - as odds were that it was going to cause whichever computer I had to freeze.

I'm an Opera Browser nut. Beats the crap out of IE or Netscape. Get used to seeing me put http://www.opera.com/ here and there for a while. It's not just better for F-Chat - it's better, period.

Patience, folks - the system is already being tweaked - it's best to start low and slow, then work settings up to find what actual resources are needed to support the server/database. Think of it as breaking in a new engine. Plus, Rob has a life - and that meant he was busy doing other things Ferrari yesterday.
