The u.k. car magazine autocar features comment from a u.s. journalist. This week he tells a harrowing tale of a young friend who works for honda and always dreamed of ferrari ownership. It came true when he flew from atlanta to phoenix to see a perfect 47k 328gts.However on the way home near dallas some low life managed to get in front of him(on the 3rd reckless attempt) in a dodge pick up and immediatley slammed the brakes on.The 328's nose went under the dodge causing horrific looking damage(photo was included). The guy gets out of the dodge calls him a muthaf***er.He wanted to wipe the smile off his face!!He did that with damage at $18000!I had no idea that Ferrari driving could provoke such jealosy or is this more common in the u.s. than over here?

That is a horrible story and is certainly not representative of America's roads in general. There are jealous people everywhere and sometimes you are in the wrong place at the wrong time. They should shoot that guy though! :(

That's terrible! I think I'ld lose control if something like this would happen to me someday! They should take jealous people like that of the road, take their driver's license! Certainly don't let them near Ferrari's!
This makes me angry and sad at the same time!!! :(

    Horrible and unfortunate. :(

Sadly similar behavior is not all that uncommon. Just look at the large number of threads on this board pertaining to tailgaters, people cutting offnice cars, cars getting keyed, spit on, tires slashed and much worse.

There are a lot of crappy people out there...

Have experienced various things during my travels. And yes, usually the white trash truck types are the worst. First attempt might be a mere "perceived mistake," yet after they try again i usually let them pass and i slam on my brakes and park it on the breakdown lane to the side of the road. They usually disappear... but ONCE the guy was being insistent so i picked up my cell phone and.... You can guess the rest. He left the scene fast!

Most people are cool and all, yet there are exceptions.

The WORST thing to do is try speeding away. They usually speed towards you and they usually crash and kill themselves or someone else. have seen/heard about this happening once too many times :(

Best bet is to pull over to breakdown lane, use cell phone...

I just felt sorry for the guy and thought his story needed telling. The tale ends with a mention of the insurance companies arguing who is to blame! If someone hurt my baby in that fashion i would do time!!

Just two days ago, I was making a left hand turn to get on an
interstate on-ramp. The ramp makes a circular turn to the right as it goes downhill. While waiting for traffic to go by, a small truck makes a right turn onto the ramp followed by a giant industrial dump truck. The dump truck lays on his horn and deliberately tries to run the small truck off the road. The dump truck slams on his brakes and comes to a complete stop. By this time, I had made the left turn and am behind the dump truck slowing down to a complete stop. Apparently the dump truck driver had some kind of road rage argument going with the guy in the small truck. The dump truck driver then climbs out of his truck carrying a tire tool and starts waving it at the small truck. The driver of the small truck does a quick jog to the left, jumps the curb of the center dividing medium in order to go around the stopped dump truck. After passing the dump truck, he speeds up onto the interstate. Then the dump truck driver hops back into the cab, starts the dump truck, and then speeds off after the small truck at 70mph or more. (the speed limit was 65).
I think the dump truck guy was an idiot for letting his rage cause him to run the small truck off the road, block traffic behind him, and most importantly of all, threaten the small truck driver with ONLY a tire tool. Nowadays, the small truck driver is probably packing a 9mm pistol or a .45, and is probably just itching to ventilate a redneck truck driver who threatens him with a tire tool.

Some north Texas pick up truck drivers just have that mentality. I live in a state where it’s common to see a gun rack, NASCAR stickers, hunting license decals, etc... all over there truck. This doesn't surprise me at all, it happened to me when I had my BMW 633 csi. Some idiot tried to run me off the road for driving a well kept auto. Don't know why someone would take a risk like that in public but the dumba$$ bubba theory is the only thing can think of. Someone gets mad just because that person couldn’t work hard enough to drive a Ferrari so having the owner try to cause an accident & have them take the blame. What a crying shame.

While driving slowly on snowy roads in my 308 some pickup trucks harassed me. Got to my back and flashed their lights and rung their horns. Gave the finger and all. Nice.

Rest assured it's an isolated incident. Magazines are in the biz to sell copies, how entertaining is a "I drove home without any incidents or problems" compared to a friend-of-a-friend encounter with Redneckus Pickemupus?

Snotty BMW drivers in La Jolla and soccer moms in minivans can be just as guilty of that kind of immature stupidity. I was driving my 67 mini cooper along at 55mph (doesn't go faster) and some jerks in a 3 series decided that they'd have fun swerving into my lane repeatedly to see if they could force me off the road. Fun times. Not much I could do about that, other than slow down and take an offramp once they'd passed it already.

Then this week some soccer mom in a Nissan Quest decided she'd blaze through our neighborhood going 70 in a 35. I was cruising in my VR6 with my infant son in the passenger seat, and since there were kids about, I was going the speed limit. The lady tailgated me for a couple minutes, then slowed down, then floored it and came up on my bumper with her horn going, trying to get me to go faster I suppose. Well I wasn't playing that. I gradually slowed down to 25mph and ignored her. Then the road became two lanes in our direction, so I moved over to let her pass. She kept on my bumper. Well, this is the car we're trying to sell, and I really don't care if it gets totalled or anything, so after another 30 seconds or so of her riding my tail and honking, I jammed on the brakes. She swerved in order to avoid hitting me, then decided to come up alongside me and yell. I blew her a kiss and mouthed "you're hot" and she sped off, happily in front of a traffic cop pulling out of the police substation there. So there is some instant justice sometimes, but it still amazes me how people will behave on the road.

Not that, ahem, I've ever been guilty of road rage or doing stupid stuff myself, ahem cough cough...*

A few years ago, Car And Driver had a ten best stories edition where a fellow in California had saved for years to buy a Ferrari and managed to purchase a 308. Soon after, some fellow in a pickup hit him on purpose. When the hapless ferrari driver approached the pickup, the pickup driver brandished a tire iron. The story ends with the Ferrari driver shooting and killing the pickup driver from an extrordinary distance using a handgun. As I recall, the Ferrari driver was sentanced to a lengthy term, the distance of the shot having convinced that the Ferrari driver was so despondant about his car as to completely disregard the safety of those standing around his intended target.

Having had beater trucks cut me off and some room temperature IQ goons giving me the finger, I am beginning the respect his markmanship. So far, the biggest danger has been Porsche Boxter drivers trying to buzz me on the highway.

    Cheers to all

I've only had one incident of anything similar to what others have described. Driving home from church at around 11 o'clock in the morning I need to make a left turn at a 3 way light. A truck heading the opposite direction, old beat down brown chevy I believe, stops to make a right turn. Looks at me and then stops. The idiot sits there and waits and waits and waits, 2 or 3 cars piling up behind him. At first I'm wondering what the hell he is doing then I figure he's going to try and block me. So my left turn light turns green I start to make the turn and yep he drives out to try and block and he stops and starts laughing. I just shrug and noticed that there was just barely room for me to go by and squeeze past him and go on my merry way.

Now I was really perplexed by the guy's behavior because I being my poor self was in a late eighties Volvo sedan. Just what the hell is some idiot in a beat up pick up truck doing blocking an old Volvo from making a left turn? It would make some small sense if it was a Ferrari, but an old Volvo with peeling clear coat?

A few months ago I was in my sl500 and some jerk was tailgating me with high beams. so I slowed. and came to a complete stop.. and then powerslide around him ending up rite behind him...he **** his pants and took off...and I chased him for about 45 minutes.. and the as$whole ended up smashing his civic into a parked car. he was ok. though.. felt bad but he deserved it. he probley thought I was some old man driving the speed limit so I had to regulate his a$$

Um right. So, instead of moving out of the way or just ignoring the guy, you do something incredibly stupid (power sliding on a public road), he speeds off. Now instead of smiling and then going back to driving normally, you chase after him (to what end?) for 45 minutes and you call him an as*hole when, while running from you, he crashes into a parked car? You both deserved to crash, preferably into each other.

But for some reason I'm finding myself doubting your story.

If I could have moved out of the way I would have...he would not stop, but think what you wish. and on a two lane road on a backroad...my safety is far more important then some idiot trying to harrass me for no reason..

Funny reading this thread becourse today a guy on the oposite side of the road swerved this car in front of my 355 then swerved back again deliberately, and i reacted by takeing evasive action. As the C**T drove by he was laughing.I hope i may see him again sometime soon, what a good day that will be.

thanks for wishing that I crash! I wish I could wish the same thing on you, but you dont even have a car. sorry big guy!

  22. Aureus

Your safety is so important that you chase after someone who was tailgating you on a two lane back-road? And can you tell me how you managed to safely power slide around this person and end up behind him on a small two lane back road?

I do have a car, and you can wish me to crash if you like. When I drive fast it is by myself and if I find another car ahead of me I simply slow down to the speed limit and drive normally. If a car comes speeding up behind me and rides the rear I pull off at the closest turn out and let the person by. And I have managed to accomplish that task on small "2" lane mountain roads.

Can you also explain how you were able to end up behind someone who was tailgating you by doing a power slide, but not be able to move out of his way?

An exam on a saturday would be... intersting. Your can use as many red herrings as you wish, but you didn't answer any of the questions so I'll simply repeat them. I've got a very simply feeling that you are simply lying about the encounter, that you probably do not own an sl500 and are simply some strange person trying to impress people on a forum.
