For years, Daytonas have been stuck in a rut. They have been trading in the $95 to $125 range. Has their time finally come? Is 2004 the year that we will see run of the mill Daytonas trade for, say, $150? Or how about $200+

Why ask why? I have always wanted a Daytona, and I'm concerned that the train might be leaving the station. Besides Malcolmb is gonna whup my butt if I don't buy one.

    Dr Tax,

If you want a $150k Daytona, bring a suitcase of Dollars over to England...

Seriously, I think they've moved up appreciably from a couple of years ago - particularly at auction - but haven't yet reflected the degree to which they've been talked up in the trade.

Strongest recent price was the GBP 104k made by a 3,000 mile RHD car at auction - but that's hardly a typical case.

In terms of supply & demand, I guess they're now on a par with the 275 GTB/4 - roughly three times as many Daytonas built, and trading at roughly one-third the price. Pretty good company...

PS How colour-sensitive are US prices...?

    Dale,

Even stuck in a rut, they are not loosing money like some F cars we know. You just have to keep the car up (which in itself is sometimes not cheap) and at the end you will get (more or less) your money back.

An extreme case of appreciation is with the 360 spider at this moment, but that has a limitation in time. With the Daytona we have "bottomed out".

I remember the day when when someone offered me 450,000 for one of my daytonas in the late 80's. I think I now can be convinced to part with one of mine for 150, even though 450 K didnt sound eniticing enough then. But I am not sure why you say that the train may be leaving the station... I dont see that though i see fewer than ever daytonas for sale in the Ferrari Market Letter.

They are not better than a Maranello. They are older and vintage...but definitely not better in my humble opinion

Coach, I have been following Daytona prices closely for about 4 years now, and every year, the pundits keep saying that this will be the breakout year. One of these days they will be right because Daytonas certainly have the hertiage. A Daytona may have never won at Le Mans like the TRs and 250 GTOs, but there sure is a lot of history there, not to mention being a true supercar. Imagine that it is 1970, where else in the world could you go and pick up a up a car that would go 175 mph right off the showroom floor?

Granted the Daytonas don't look as sexy as the 275s and more of them were made. But $425 for a 275 v. $125 for a Daytona, which is a better car in almost all respects?

Or compare a Daytona to a 250 GTO. Is a Daytona really only worth 1% of a GTO? Don't get me wrong. To me, a 250 GTO has got to be one of the sexiest
looking cars of all time. But I wouldn't make it number one in my book. The early TRs, the Daytona Cobra, the 275 shortnose, and yes, even the Ford GT-40 are all right up there.

So yes, someday, the train will leave the station. You might just yet get another $450 offer for your Daytona. I wonder if you will take it. I kinda doubt it.

    Take care, DrTax

Dale, you're not supposed to tell everybody until after you've bought one!;)

In all seriousness, I've been watching the market very closely for a long time. Looking at top-notch examples only, I accurately predicted large inceases in values of the 246 GT/GTS, 330 GTC, and 250 GT/L.

If I had to pick the next bunch of models to take off, they would be the Daytona, 2-cam 275 GTB, 275 GTS and series II PF Cabriolet. Each of these has experienced slow upward movement but, I predict that we will see serious increases in prices of excellent examples of each over the next year or two. Then again, I'm no expert.

Interesting. What about the 330 GTS? Are they already all the money?

Care to give us a dollar number for a cherry Daytona in, say, a year from now?

Let's say that the current real getting price for a no-stories, no-problem Daytona is $125. Will this car be at $150 a year from now?

What is a "no-stories, no-problem" Daytona? A concours car? I bought mine a year ago. Since then I have had the dash, seats and some other interior details redone. I am currently having some small stress cracks in the nose repaired (typical Daytona thing...). The car is pretty dang near perfect, but its not a 100pt FCA Pebble Beach trailer queen. I could have sold it several months ago for considerably more than $125 to a gentleman who really wanted an early Euro car with a plexi nose. Doesnt matter to me really what they are worth or where the value is going because I hope to own this car 30 years from now. Still, I was in your shoes as a "potential buyer" only a year ago so I know where your coming from.

So..... where are you coming from? ITs simple really. You have a terminal case of Daytonaitis. There is only one cure and you know what it is. Use the "they are about to skyrocket in price so I better move fast" arguement with the wife as justification and start shopping my friend!

Yes! Like everything else, they'll probably continue to experience a slow increase, but they've seen a large price boost in recent years, in-line with that of the 330 GTC.

"Cherry?" Meaning concours-ready? Cars like that are aleady bringing $150K. I think that, in 12-24 months from now, these same cars will probably follow the Lusso over that magical $200K mark. I'm not talking about $100K dogs, but excellent examples.

[Disclaimer: I am no market expert! These are just the opinions of an enthusiast that has never bought or sold a single Ferrari.]
