One of the more interesting things to note in the data is that almost all of the braking times are in the 4.0-4.5 second range, with a few outliers. Huge disparity in terms of cost, horsepower, even power/weight, but to think that a half second covers 90% of the field - in braking. Guess modern tires are miracle workers!

Think either 2000 or 2001 Spec WRC Focus minus the turbo inlet restrictor. And BANG 600hp 600lbft of torque has a matter of fact if all the WRC cars didn't have the inlet restrictor they all would produce the horsepower figures of the 'Killer' Bees Group B cars of the '80s.
The modern WRC car get 0-60 on either gravel or tarmac spec in the three second range. Mid three's for the tarmac and high three's for gravel spec.

I'd love to see how the McLaren F1 compared to these. Its still the car thats regarded as the one that others need to aspire too.

I believe Autocar (could have been another mag) did a test of the McLaren F1 LM (the road version of the race car, with 680hp instead of just 627hp) and it didn't go very well as I remember, they got a pretty pitiful time, something like 11.7sec.

Part of the problem was the F1's somewhat wooden brakes, but also; they couldn't get the tires to stop spinning...all the way up to 100mph through 3rd gear...even though they tried different tire pressures, and I think even different brands of tire. The 0-100mph time was pretty slow, for the F1, at around 6.6 or 6.8s, especially considering it has more hp and less weight than the roadcar Autocar tested to a 0-100mph time of 6.3 seconds...

They also only did a few runs, either 3 or 5 and no run really satisfied Jonathan Palmer, the test driver, but they beat the then current record by a huge margin so they quit...:-(

So, as a McLaren F1 fan, I would say a 0-100-0 time of 11.0sec wouldn't be out of the question, maybe even quicker, but it's mostly up to the tires, which don't provide enough grip for the horsepower and lock-up under the F1's non-ABS brakes.

i was looking at these numbers and compared them to everything with four wheels. that's pretty impressive that these cars are competative in a straight line with a motorcycle.

the mclaren website reported the 0-100 time of the F1 to be 6.3sec. the link is to a detailed 0-100-0 table for the F1 LM. the F1 LM got a 0-100-0 time of 11.5sec. but let's not forget, this was in the mid 90s.

The LM creates a ton more downforce than the standard Mclaren which, along with the wheel spin probably accounts for the slower acceleration.

I don't see it getting under 11 though. The Enzo barely did that and it is quicker to 100 and at this point definitely quicker back down to 0.

actually the LM has more HP and weighs less than the standard F1. so the faster acceleration numbers than the standard F1 is understandable. mclaren even says that the LM is the fastest accelerating road F1 built.

    It apparently doesn't accelerate faster. I've only heard of a 0-60 of 3.3 and a 0-100 of 6.7

That makes it a tiny bit slower than the standard F1. Perhaps later when traction is less an issue it will zoom ahead, but early on the standard F1 actually has an advantage.

to me a difference of .2 or .3 seconds is trivial in measuring the 0-60 or 0-100 of any car. when it comes down to that it can be any number of things that make the difference. infact, when you are measuring times to the hundreth of a digit, does it really matter? it would if those digits were the end of a lap time, but in acceleration? if my car beat yours by .2 sec to 60 or 100, neither one of us would know the difference without that stop watch.

there is a person on the board who knows an F1 owner and i believe the person also owns an enzo. the only fair comparison would be to stick both of them on a track and measure lap times or any other performance numbers you could come up with. i have yet to see a head to head comparison between the enzo and the f1 by any magazine. so a private test would have to suffice.

I don't think there is much chance it's slower than the standard F1...there are just no magazine tests (that I know of) besides that Autocar test, to show faster times. The tires were probably old and worn out, the track surface might have been sub-par, who knows the condition of the gear box and clutch, and they didn't give it that many chances...so there is definitely room for improvement.

The LM weighs 72kg (158lb) less, has 53 more hp, shorter gears, and wider & lower profile tires...so I don't think there is much chance the roadcar is faster, I just think there haven't been any published acceleration tests that show its true potential.

I agree that .2 or .3 seconds is not much of a difference in the context of testing, that's how much acceleration times can vary between two different tracks with the same driver, and it can vary alot more with different drivers, but I disagree with this section of your post...

I don't want to offend you...but it sounds like you haven't done much driving, otherwise you would know that .2 or .3sec is actually quite a big difference when you are racing...you definitely will know the difference...it will be a clear win.

Here, I did a little math, at 100mph you cover 146ft every second, so 146x.3=44ft, meaning the person who is .3sec ahead of you at 100mph will be 44ft in front of you, or roughly 2 Enzo car lengths (taking into account the length of the car infront of you and measuring back to the front of your bumper). Two car lengths isn't a huge amount, but you will surely know the winner without a stop watch...

when i said that i didn't mean in the context of a racing or track environment. i meant by the seat of your pants feel. i've done a couple of track events and understand how much that tenth of a second matters. i guess i just wasn't clear about the context of it. if both of us were sitting in a car, and drove each of them seperately, one after another. measuring the times with a stop watch, neither of us would know the difference, unless we actually checked the time.

Oh, I'm sorry, I completely misunderstood what you were saying...yes definitely, you are correct.
