Pete, I really enjoy these little rebuttals we have. What a great chat site that there are so many knowledgeable (sp?) F1 guys here. Cheers, Tony
I really believe both would be successful if they swaped eras. Some people are just good, period. Like Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan, they just have it. It's a level that cannot be reached simply from years of practice It's just pure raw talent that is a gift from birth that has become perfected from years of experience. They have that "lucky gene" that others lack. Anyway that's just my opinion.
Jon and Pete, here is good article in autoweek. http://www.autoweek.com/cat_content.mv?port_code=autoweek&cat_code=motorsportsnews&loc_code=index&content_code=07800750
Anthony & Pete, Pick up a copy of the UK's Autosport edition (current issue) on sale at many Barnes and Nobles. Cover story is on Senna with a lot of articles and the exclusive interview that Prost did with some Belgium firm that is producing a new biography in conjunction whith the Senna Foundation. The firm used only a few comments from Prost in their soon to be released DVD, but the actual interview lasted one hour and it's all contained in the Autosport Magazine. It's the first and according to Prost, the only time he has ever talked about Senna in an open interview. What struck me most as that he was the one that advised Ron Dennis to pick Ayrton. Dennis hadn't even considered him and was heavilly leaning on Piquet. Also has interviews with D.Hill, Berger and a few others. Regards, Jon
Yes good article, thanks for the link. Totally agree. MS will be like Doohan in motor bikes. We all know he had great talent but we are left wondering how really great it was ... due to the weakness of the opposition. I agree also that Senna was faster than Prost, but I will always believe that Prost knew better how to win championships ... as you do not always have to be fastest. I think he learnt this from Lauda, and both Prost and Lauda always looked at the bigger picture, ie. the WC is what counts NOT the qualifying lap and not each win. In races though I remember seeing Prost step up when he had too (just like Lauda). Senna though, was like MS in his early years and had to win everything. IMO MS would have something like 8 WC's if he had relaxed that attitude in '97 and '98 ... as he made many, many mistakes and ended up with 0 points. Senna would not have been able to live happily after motor racing (like Piquet) and I think his ending was always destined to be like it was ... while leading! Pete
Thanks Jon I bought it yesterday! Great articles. Pete, I think the second Senna thought he wasn't quick enough he would have retired. Prost was an outstanding driver and had the cars been more reliable he should have won the 82-84 Championship giving him 7 championships. Tony
