Last night while I was leaving the highway, at the T-intersection of the off-ramp and the street, I was almost broadsided by a police van that ran red light at about 40mph. There are traffic lights and I had green light. At the intersection, there are trees that prevented me from seeing the direction the van was coming from. I had my windows down, but didn't hear a thing. The police van had its lights on but no siren, so obviously I didn't know it was coming.

I was halfway thru the intersection when the van came within a foot or 2 from the car's nose. The van swerved quickly to the opposite direction and almost plowed into 3 or 4 taxis that stopped for the red light. Luckily, he swerved to the outside lane which was free of cars, otherwise, the van would have created a serious pileup.

I was momentarily stunned by this event, so I stopped in the middle of the intersection trying to gather my wits. I think the cop driving the van was also stunned because I saw the van sitting in the opposite lane for about 10 seconds. He then realized that he didn't have the siren on, so he flipped it on and drove off.

Looking back....if I had been 1 second quicker thru the intersection, the van probably would've broadsided my car on the driver side and I could've been wasted. It pisses me off that the police can sometimes act with such recklessness when driving to the scene. I find HK police frequently running to scenes with just the lights flashing but no siren. I mean do they expect people to notice them with just the lights flashing??

Do cops in your area speed to scenes without sirens blasting?

similar thing almost happened to me, but it was a lady on her cell phone. she ran a red light and t-boned the car in the lane to my left. if it wasn't for the fact that i had wasn't paying attention to the light and fiddling with the coin holder, i would have been left ontime and that would have been me. it's funny how those things work out though.

i notice that a lot of cops would rather keep their sirens off, maybe it's for that element of surprise or something. i always thought they needed permission of some sort to choose either sirens, lights or both.

You can take solace in the fact that he was probably beaten as a child by his little sister and the other neighborhood girls. Why else would he be a cop?

I have always heard that most cops were bullied when they were kids. Think there is any truth to this?

A cop cut through a gas station to avoid a red light and plowed into my mom and he issued her a ticket.

I can't count the times I see the FHP and the local boys blastin down the highways, no lights, no siren, at outrageous speeds.

The other day I was crusing along I-4 doing about 70 when a local Sheriff's car blasted by me at what was easily 100+. No lights, no siren.

Oh yeah, this was about 3:00pm and it was in the Disney World area. Lots of heavy traffic, half of which would be confused tourists in rental cars.

    Real safe that was....
