After much searching and one lost opportunity i am finally flying to Uk to look at two cars, a 1992 512TR with 20k miles at westoversports cars in dorset for sale at £49995 and a 1984 Boxer 512i with same miles but a previous concours winner and apparently one of the best, at £45000 it comes with major service just done inc belts and is for sale private, do these prices sound fair???? i wont know which model i prefer until i can see both, wish me luck!

    Hi

Ive done a little research in autotrader.co.uk and found two ferrari 512 tr.

    http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/cars_search.asp?modelexact=1&lid=search_used_cars_full&make=FERRARI&model=512&min_pr=75&max_pr=&postcode=cr2+al&miles=1500&max_records=200&source=0&sort=3

One is at 49.9k pounds, 93, and has serviced, the other is at 44.9k pounds, 92, and cambelt done. So I guess that you are paying a fair price, if you get the 512tr.

If you get the 512i, I think that you will be paying a good price.

Personally I would get a 512tr, it's more beautiful, more powerful, newer, and the last ferrari with a boxer engine (if we exclude the 512m :D ). And you can get it for a few thousand pounds more than the 512i!

    Dear Steveirl,

I have a 512TR. The car you are contemplating may well be the car which was in for servicing at Westover's when I visited to view an F40 some two years or so ago. I recall that it was owned by a gentleman in Surrey and in whose possession it had been for some years. It was red with cream interior. If it is the same car, I think it had a Westover history. 512TR's are wonderful machines. I have owned mine for some years now. Do take your time and acquire the right one and make certain that it has good history. For myself, I do not think the 512BB really compares with the 512TR. For example, the design is much older and it is far less sophisticated.

A distinction must be made for both: Are they Left or Right drive?

Interesting that most of you prefer the 512 tr to the boxer, i realise it is a more modern car and far better to drive, some say it is one of the best cars ferrari built, but in my opinion the car that drives better is not necessarily the best driving experience!! I have always wanted a boxer, the 512tr has come into the picture as a result of advice given to me to consider an alternative, hence i shall view examples of both, also interesting that most consider the 512tr to be the better looking car, i am surprised (just like the 5th gear team on the ferrari special) the 512tr is a stunning car but for me the boxer wins hands down in the looks dept. anyway roll on saturday, i fly to bournemouth then

Steve, I too looked at Boxers before buying my TR, but I knew what I had to have... the one car that had caught my attention more than any other all those years ago. I know looks are a very personal but I believe that the TR series still holds its own today. At AutoItalia yesterday my car had as much interest (at least from the public as opposed to from other F-car owners) as much more modern and exotic machinery worth 3 times the price. The 512TR or M are a step up in performance again, though only afficionados will notice the external differences (except perhaps the wheels).

I'm not saying you should buy to be noticed, just putting a word in for one of the all time classics. I would definitely choose 512TR over BB.

Seems to me you're predisposed to the 512i BB: Can't say I blame you for a second. Perhaps not on this thread, but time and time again, one sees that F-Chat's Boxer owner/caretakers swear by them.

I must start by saying I am biased. I have a 365 Boxer and it is a truly fabulous car. I bought it a year ago and have had no trouble with it all except for incorrectly wired cooling fans - they had been wired to to blow rather tahn suck by the previous owner's specialist.

I have heard that the 512TR is a car, and no doubt it is a lot more sophistaced and will handle better with the lowered engine etc. but to me it will never be a classic, not in Europe anyway.

The Boxers are real classic Ferraris and presently undervalued, in my opinion.

The 512TR gets my vote over the BB , but then again I am biased.

well interesting that most here say I should opt for the 512Tr over the boxer, i will not know until i can experience both, Mike Wheeler called me today to confirm my visit on saturday to check out a boxer he has sourced for me and also told me that the 512tr i was also going to view at Westover near Bournemouth has just sold, that is the second 512tr that has sold within days of my planned trip to view, when i started looking advice, there were several tr for sale and all have now sold, yet testarossas do not seem to be moving, interesting the way the market can change in such a relatively short space of time, i still need to view a Tr so if anyone knows of a car for sale please let me know

Steve, consider this: The 512tr may potentially be less expensive to maintain than a boxer!

For me, the 512tr is one of the most beautifully styled ever made ferraris. Im sure that a lot of people will agree on that! But beauty is subjective, so if you think that the boxer is more beautiful than the 512tr, you should follow your heart :)

A man after my own heart. The older cars may not be as fast as the modern ones, but the raw experience of the older ones is in my opinon far greater. Modern cars can be somewhat diluted. The Boxer was always my dream car, and I probably would have bought one, instead of the Dino, if only they had made a Spider! Go with your heart and you will not regret it, go with your head and you will always wonder!

I actually dont think that the 512tr is diluted at all. Compared to a lamborghini diablo it might be slower, but the 512tr still has that sound... And that feeling... Of actually getting to drive the last true Ferrari!

512TR definately the best of the TRs, excepting the very rare 512M, whose visual mods you either like or you don't.

Autoweek in US ran an article showing Gerhard Berger examining one with interest, don't know if he took it home!!!

OTOH there are RABID Boxer fans in US! Most of them post here in GFD.
