    On our 2000 550...From flikkering-empty fuel guage to stall-will NOT restart---48 miles..

Then it took 25.8 to fill (did not top off ).

    Manual says 30 gallons capacity.

We get around 10 mpg in town and 14 hiway.

    10mpg, *cough* :D

I've had a similar occurrence with my car, the manual seemed very
optimistic about the size of the gas tank, over-rating it by almost 5
gallons. I haven't driven my car to a dry tank, but the needle has
gotten down into the red zone, which was close enough to empty
    for me.

Well, I fly airplanes occasionally and we have to take into account
the fuel that collects at the bottom of the tanks, about 3 gals which
is unusable, but that is in a plane with 56 gals of total capacity and
not 30. Also it's an airplane so it doesn't really correspond to
    Ferraris...

guys - i don't know how ferrari does their gas tanks, but in most cars, running the tank to near empty is usually not encouraged.

this might be a "record" of dubious distinction, gents.

Like I said in the other thread...I love science, data, and you guys, but I love my fuel pump more ;^) Glad I filled at 40mi, extra 8 miles @10mpg makes it .8g, added to my 25.0=25.8g...WOOHOO, clinical correlation!!

I think the vapor collection system precludes fast top offs, so pack a lunch and try to to off your tanks, kids. You can get 2+ g in after click-off.

Guess we're all members of FOO:Friends of OPEC.

Lee: will have to try getting in an extra 2 gallons next time. I always stop at the first click.

    Doody: it's only money... :D

You can't be sure of that one either... :D

Doody: I was thinking of another competition: he who gets the most expensive fill-up. But then Lee would go out, drain down to -100 miles, and then fill it up with 100 octane @ $4/g. :D

I filled up today - 21.29 gallons at $2.699 a gallon on I-5 on the way from SF to LA. Total $57.46. Is this a record for a fill-up on normal fuel?

I couldn't believe the price on I-5. Highway robbery

Mike: hugely surprising. Local Chevron (92 & Polhemus) is just under $2. 2.70 is quite the spread... BTW, how long are you down in LA for?

We still have cheap gas here even at that price, sadly. Guess i'll have to try harder to fill up, hold record.... Strong work, Mike. Friends of OPEC are proud of you...

Heck, all I know is I can make it to Vegas on a tank but need to fill it up half way to the Bat Area. Never did have a car where the gas gauge was worth more than a bucket of spit.

    Happy Thanksgiving All!

When I replaced my fuel pumps the car took 30 gallons from dead empty to full. as you know I drive It all the time and 30 gallons is correct.
    Have a great holiday season

Bill- Might be a new record: reviving a 14 year old thread. The 550 holds more than the 575M, at least US versions.

If you pump it out on level ground until the pumps no longer pick up fuel there's almost 5 gallons left.

There's always going to be over 4 gallons left when you run out of fuel. Not the brightest design.

I usually never let my tanks get anywhere near empty, but I was in the boonies with the 456 once and put 20 gallons in when I finally found a station. The last ten miles were... uncomfortable.
