I am in deep need of help. I have an archos jukebox fm recorder and it just stopped working, no activity. I'm thinking that the battery is dead because i do get a -7.60 reading from the battery contacts on the unit it self.

What kind of battery do i need?

Sounds very unhappy to me. If it's supposedly charged but you're only getting 2.9V where you should have 4.2V, either your charger is messed up or the battery is toast.

I used a multimeter to check if the adapter was messed up but it was kicking out a good ~9.0V IIRC, I'm at school so I can't check again for another few hours but I'll get back to you on that.

The battery should still have enough juice to start up, and if not whenever I plug in the AC Adapter into the Archos unit I *should* see some activity like the screen say that the unit is plugged into the charger, however I get nothing, it's like it's dead. I'm still trying to check a bunch of points to see if any voltage is getting through them.

I plugged the adapter in, checked a point and it gave me a clean 8.6V ~.
I had the battery plugged in, checked the SAME point and gave me a near 2.9V~, that would mean the battery is getting some sort of juice from the adapter when plugged in right?

Edit: I was thinking through this logic, tell me if it's flawed

I can get a signal from Point A from the adapter, I can get a signal from Point A from the battery. Doesn't that mean the adapter is hitting the battery. No, because I checked the battery ..

AND I JUST HIT AN IDEA. CHECK BACK IN A FEW HOURS! I'm going to check my battery contacts on the board to see if they get around 9.0V from the adapter, if they do that means it is getting some power.

    Couple of thoughts:

If the battery is shorted, the unit may not turn on no matter what you do. I've had that happen with laptops. Try powering it up with the AC cord minus the battery.

You could be getting charge to the battery, but that doesn't mean it's responding.

I'm getting like 1.2 mV to the battery contacts, so that's very very little.

It doesn't turn on with just AC cord plugged in, it's like frozen or something. How do I get charge to the battery? I am pretty sure something is burned up in there, do you know a quick way to narrow down what might be faulty?

Meant to say something burned up in the unit, not the battery itself.

Now it could be any number of things.

What was the last thing it did before it died? Was it plugged in during a thunderstorm, or did you maybe have a power surge? Did it do something weird while playing or downloading music?

I just looked up some info on your specific model. Looks like you're not alone in your troubles. I read reports of dead batteries, cold solder joints and totally dead units. Might try calling Archos.
