With a pain in my back tooth I went to the Dentist on Friday... then to
the Oral Surgeon and the Plastic Surgeon. I was informed that I have to
have reconstructive jaw surgery on Thursday (Yesterday). Apparently one of my wisdom teeth has decided to grow into the jaw and the resulting
infection has destroyed some of the bone. You could even see the pus
ball in the bone on a damn x-ray. The dentist even commented that he
is amazed the Navy Dentist that looked at me two months ago did not
    catch it. Damn Navy.

So now I am on Oxcicotton and Percocet (Yea,
narcotics.) and some mean antibiotics and was in surgery for repair
of the jaw, possibly with rib bone, and extraction of the remaining
    teeth.

You should look at the up side, with my jaw wired shut, and a hole in
my chest I will not be able to make snappy comments and other
(Shenanigans!!) and get myself... and others... in as much trouble as
    I normally do.

(Anyone who wants to can post or send me some porn.....)

At least you got pain meds out of it. The only problem is they give them to you for a reason...to take care of that extreme pain.
When i broker my arm and had to get 12 screws and 2 plates in it i got some pretty heavy pain killers, including some morphone right after the sugery. All my friends were like "cool, they gave you morphine. That must have been awesome." Wrong. it sucked.

im an oral surgeon and your story of wisdom tooth destroying bone is typical but does not usually require reconstructive surgery as bone will refill when tooth is removed and wiring of jaw is extremely unusual. post more info if you like or pm me. get another opinion. be sure drs are board certified by their specialty. good luck

To counteract the meds---take 1000mg of Vit C every hour until you get the "runs". This will help clear out the toxins out of your body. I take 12,000mg of Vit C every day and have NEVER had any more colds, flu or infections.

Is 12,000 mg overkill? It seems like a lot so im thinking u must have the most flourecent yellow unrine of anyone inthe world. I drink a glass of OJ every morning for breakfast. Would that be enough to compliment my regular diet?

Agreed. Linus Pauling was a smart man but got a little out of orbit toward the end with the Vit C thing.

Bear in mind, Ascorbic Acid is metabolized into oxalate, we used to see alot of CaOxalate stones back in the days folks were gobbling Vit C tabs, I think Vit C is great but not at over 2 grams per day.

Ive got a question? When is the best time to get your wisdom teeth taken out? Im 20, and i only have 2 normal size wisdom teeth, and one mini wisdom tooth. But i think my normal ones are starting to crowd, or rather, push my teeth together. Im just asking this for future reference. Like when i have kids is it best to get em taken out early. Ive noticed a lot of my friends had theirs taken out when they were rather young(15 or so).

    Thanks for the help,
    Ryan S.

    Hope you recover quickly.

Agree that 12 gms of Vit C is alot. Remember the papers in PNAS about 1980? Pauling was a member of the NAS and was thus allowed to publish back to back articles about Vit C. The editors felt so strongly about them being wrong that disclaimers were written.

Sorry to hear of your problems. Hope you get through it with no other complications.

I think I'll be adding a meeting with my dentist to my schedule soon. He told me over a year ago that my wisdom need to come out. I'm 25 now, he said something about them bonding to the bone after this age and that making it harder to get them out. Also, I was told they are impacted. Anyone know what that means?

Without getting too technical or giving too long of an explanation, most people don't have room in their mouths for their third molars(wisdom teeth) so as a result they often get stuck behind the second molars or they develop at different angles causing them to become impacted and not come in the way they should. If they are impacted that means they are surrounded by bone and the bone needs to be drilled away to remove the tooth. Ideally they should be removed around 14 or so years of age. By this time the mandible is pretty close to being fully developed yet the roots of the tooth are not fully developed thus being easier to remove. Third molar roots are often curved or bulbous making them very difficult to remove. With age the roots will fully develop, the bone will become more dense, you won't heal as fast and often times the tooth will "fuse" with the bone. Also the roots of the lower thirds sometimes get really close to the inferior alveolar nerve increasing the risk of damage to the nerve. If this occurs you can end up with temporary or permanent numbness of the lower half of your jaw. Third molars often cause teeth to shift causing some crowding in your front teeth. Unfortunately they can also get infected resulting in bone loss that can also affect the teeth near it. DrStranglove, I hope all goes well with your recovery.
    Take care, Bill
