I have read articles that indicate that fill of gearbox oil should be done through the gearbox fill plug until it comes back out and then add a small amount of oil to the transfer fill. And another article says to fill from the transfer fill point until oil flows out of the gearbox fill point. Which is the better way. Also if I do fill from the transfer fill point will it accept a free flow of oil or will it start to back up because it cannot take so much oil without restricting the fill flow.

    Thanks

I think the rule to follow is best stated:

A minimum of ~0.2 pints should be added thru the fill plug at the top of the transfer gear case. The remainder (a lot) can be added thru either the fill plug at the top of the transfer case or the fill plug on the gearbox housing.

"Which is the better way" -- depends on how Rube Goldberg your filling aparatus is for each location ;). Engine bonnet off and on jackstands -- it's no problem to put it all down the transfer gear case fill plug. Engine bonnet on and using a full-height vehicle lift -- probably easiest to add the big portion thru the main gearbox reservoir fill plug.

(The transfer gear reservoir and the main gearbox reservoir are adequately connected flow-wise such that you really can't add the gear oil fast enough to the fill plug at the top of the transfer gear case and cause a backwards overflow -- but make sure the end of your filling tube/funnel is not being blocked by the uppermost gear/hardware.)

If I fill through the transfer case when the oil flows from gearbox fill does that mean there is automatically the proer oil amount in the transfer. If I do need to add oil how much do I add there must be some oil in there since I filled from the transfer fill. Wouldnt the oil level in the tranfer self level to the proper point once the oil flows from the gearbox fill.

"If I fill through the transfer case when the oil flows from gearbox fill does that mean there is automatically the proer oil amount in the transfer." -- Correct. Regardless of where you fill from you want the oil level in the main reservoir up to the bottom of the main gearbox fill plug (i.e., add gear oil until a little runs out the open main gearbox fill plug).

"If I do need to add oil how much do I add there must be some oil in there since I filled from the transfer fill. Wouldnt the oil level in the tranfer self level to the proper point once the oil flows from the gearbox fill." -- I'm not sure if you're asking two questions here or 1, but, the transfer gear reservoir is in a "pond above a waterfall" arrangement with the main reservoir being at the bottom of the waterfall, so if you fill it all via the transfer gear case fill plug, the small necessary amount is retained in the transfer gear reservoir and the remainder cascades down into main reservoir. There a good illustration of the arrangement in the OM lubricants section.

Transfercase is the best fill point and it leaves the proper amt and then fills the gearbox, never had an issue of filling too fast and spilling out.

Agreed, I've done it this way a couple times now...no problem. I would put a dab of anti-seize lubricant on the fill port nut on the top of the transfer case though...seems kinda hard to remove sometimes.....and don't overtighten either. FWIW.

There does seem to be a bit of a restriction in flow from the transfer case to the main gearbox. It's not enough that you will likely see an overflow while filling, but last time I did it, I was pouring it in quite rapidly. I stopped when it first trickled out the gearbox opening, but it continued to flow out for some time. Messy.
