The 348 article at the Ferrari Club web site (link below) says that the widened rear track fitted to the 348 Speciale does NOT exist on the '94 Challenge cars. That is, the rear track reverted back to the old setting.

However, I have heard elsewhere that the Challenge cars DO have the special offset, just like the Speciales and the Spiders have. Anyone know the TRUTH?

The Ferrari Club article is correct. The rear track is reverted back to the old setting.

That's too bad, because the 348 Challenge is such a great car. Can the rear track be fiddled with? That is, can one modify the Challenge to have the wider track for enhanced stability? If so, how?

The rear track can be widen by using spacers. Personal choice.

you can also get a rear suspension from the SS or later 348s and put the entire thing in there.

My understanding though is that the Challenge did have the widened track. This was one of the features done to the special imported "one ofs" and most converted 348s had it done as well.

I know Byrons old 348 CH had it done to race in Challenge.

I do not know if the rear track needs to be widened to race in the challenge series. But the rear track on 94 factory challenge cars from the factory are 1578 mm.

I used to have a 94 TB and the rear track is at least as wide as the speciales. It is my understanding that all 348's beginning with the SS's have the wider rear track as well as lower gearing, including spiders. The challenge cars of 94 had lower gearing still along with a number of other goodies like better exhuast and a hotter ECU. Nevertheless, in stock form, 348's are twitchy beasts (yes I know they can be modded to work well). On a twisty local track with short straights I turned a little bit better times in my 89 328 GTB than the 348 CH and 328's aren't exactly great track cars either. On a more open track, the 328 would not have a chance, of course. At the 2000 Fclub national, I had little trouble overtaking earlier 348's with the 94 and I lay no claim to great driving. So, if you like 348's the 94 factory challenge cars are the ones to get in my opinion. They made 32 TB's and 13 TS's. About half actually raced in the series.
