    Just thought this was interesting:

"ONTANA, Calif. (AP) - California Speedway should not have been included on CART's 2004 schedule unless the track is reimbursed $2.5 million for the canceled King Taco 500.

The speedway was listed as hosting an event to be determined on the schedule released Thursday. Speedway president Bill Miller said it was "misleading" for CART to include the track.

"It is our position that there is no valid official organizer-promoter agreement in place for a 2004 CART competition at California Speedway," Miller said in a statement Friday.

The speedway is in litigation with CART after the King Taco 500, scheduled for Nov. 2, was canceled because of wildfires burning in San Bernardino County, Miller said.

Citing its agreement with CART, Miller said the speedway is due back the $2.5 million organization and rights fee previously paid, minus a mutually agreeable amount for legitimate expenses incurred by CART in preparing for the event.

"Until this matter is resolved, we are unwilling to participate in discussions concerning future relationships," Miller said.

CART warned Thursday it could run out of money next month before shareholders consider a buyout offer to keep the series going. The Champ car series also disclosed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it was in default on some of its financial obligations.

Indianapolis-based CART did not immediately return a telephone message."

What continues to bury the dagger deeper in all non-NASCAR American racing is the typical American me-first attitude of the players involved. There rarely, if ever, seems to be any consideration for the bigger picture, and as a result, all the public sees is bickering and fighting. Not a climate with which sponsors are eager to partner. Look at last year's dispute with Road America. It took the intervention of Mario Andretti to salvage the race, but not before it lost its TV coverage. Both RA and CART need each other about as badly as a body needs a beating heart.

I don't care how much PR rah-rah bulls**t the IRL throws at the public, it will NEVER be the series it wants to be or thinks it is. If Tony George were ever to sit down with Chris Pook, Roger Penske, Derrick Walker, Mario and all the other brains of racing who possess a passion beyond their egos and wallets, they could really brainstorm and come up with some incredible ideas to push open-wheel racing back into the mainstream. This is what the fan base wants, and this is what, in turn, brings $$$. Meanwhile, GT/Le Mans -style racing continues to grow in popularity due to the simple formula of providing the fans a great show at a reasonable cost. How ironic is it that the Red Bull F1 driver program is actually getting some legs, and even more so if it ends up as higher profile than either the IRL or CART?

It's all about the money. The track owners want to control what runs at their tracks. Tony George decided that CART was getting too expensive, had become something that didn't sell as well as it should. He also got into a pissing match with the owners (Championship Auto Racing Teams=CART), and the fight started. Seems like Tony won, but he ruined open wheel racing in the US.

CART is probably broke, and the series most likely done. Too bad. Bernie should have bought them.

    Good.

29 April 2001, CART lost me as a fan forever. As much as I like open wheel racing, I hope this series vanishes soon. It will be unlamented around here.
