Was going through my old photo files and found this cute photo of my pet parrot Billie (who is a Severe Macaw). Anyone else have photos of their bird(s)?

You mean the Bird wouldn't recommend the Don Ho shirt, "Matrix" leather trench coat, and serial killer gloves? :)

The other female in my life. a Soloman Islands Ecclectus. When it gets dark out she turns into the evil red bird with nasty temper.

I lucked out with my Grey. She seemed to think the red tail feathers didn't belong so she kept them plucked out for the first 4 years.
Tailess bird looked kind of funny.

Stressfull enviornment was removed when the girl friend split. The bird has tail again.

    Steve,
They do DNA testing of claw clippings (feather shaft?) to determine sex now for about 30.00. Blood test was 25.00 for mine.

I think you have a girl Billie by the look in her eye. Beautiful.

I had a Blue Front a few years ago that I aquired from a guy at work that got it from another guy at work. He only wanted 200.00 for him and I thought why not!
He attacked women without provocation. He attacked me a couple of times too. Now I know why he changed hands so often.

He died from a broken neck, flying through the house after my roomates Double Yellow Head. Whaaammm!.

I would like to have another.

    DJ,

As an guy who worked at a pet store and have owned a few parrots... Research the general personality of various breeds FIRST. Each breed is different!!! Some require more interaction than others and some are more active than others.

Then i would try to find a good breeder who will sell you the bird AS EARLY as you can handle. Since i work at home and am familiar with weaning, received Billie (Severe Macaw) at 10 weeks young. The first year or two are CRUCIAL and Billie is very polite, has good table manners (kid you not), and is a joy to be around.

Parrots generally do become a "one person bird" and/or very protective within their domain. As an example, no matter how many different people i expose Billie to, within our home she really only has eyes for me, but OUTSIDE the home she is generally friendly to others. You may also notice things over time, such as Billie hates people with dark nail polish. Not sure why, but it just "is".

Hope this helps and REMEMBER, parrots are a LIFETIME thing as they live to be 50+ years old.

NEVER BUY A PARROT ON A WHIM AND BE CAREFUL WHO TAKES CARE OF THE BIRD WHILE YOU ARE AWAY!!!

Billie has been raised to be polite and friendly and to socialize well. No bad words, no wolf whistles, etc.

    Just my humble 2 Yen.

Damn. Wish I had a neighbor like you.

Care of the bird was the reason I didn't get one, given my travel schedule. I fly my dogs wherever I go most of the time. Don't know how good this would be for birds. I think they are beautiful. Growing up in the Canary Islands I grew up around so many people with parrots! They're awesome. Have so much personality. A friend of mine had two that looked pretty much identical to me but I could always tell them apart by their mannerisms. Very very very cool.

Beautiful birds! To all who posted.

    Cheers

I think any of the birds in this thread would get along with a ~145lb Rottweiller (assmuing the Rott ate the others).

    TwinTurbo and Mark,

TT, Parrots can defend themselves quite well, yet a young parrot is very fragile and not as coordinated or developed. Perhaps a larger parrot after 2 years old would be a good with out of cage interaction with the other pets. Until 2 years old i'd suggest always observed care.

Mark, the Sun Conure is an active, louder bird. They are less expensive than other types as Sun Conures only live to be about 15 or so as i recall. This breed is not my personal fave. While they are very active and "monkeys", their near constant volume levels are not to my liking. This is MY personal preference.

Mark, what are you desiring in a parrot? Details please.

    Enjoy the Drive,

    Steven R. Rochlin
