They only have 60 minutes to do so. We have in the past because sometimes they think twice about what they post. The closer we get to no edits the more work I do later when users request edits.

    What does everyone else think?

  3. Sixty minutes is fine to edit, but please don't let users delete posts.

On other boards when people make controversial statements and delete their posts later all sneaky and whatnot.

So you would rather have them edit the post such that it is a blank post with only a "."

If nobody has been doing it on this board then why worry about it?

You should always make your words soft and sweet.

It makes it easier to EAT them later!

    Rob:

The 60 minutes works well!! There are times where you re read your post that there is a grammar or spelling mistake that you would like to correct.

What's wrong with people being able to delete their posts? Given some of the, uh, "entertaining" threads I've read, some are made by emotion that border on legal issues. I've never had to retract posts on other boards before because I always try to think before I write, but it's been close once or twice. :)

An example I can see of someone wanting to possibly retract a post is when it comes to negative feedback on questionable dealerships. If the statements are facts, great, but if they're "stretched" a little for effect, the dealership might call foul... I think the 60 minute limit is fine. My thoughts anyway.

Yesterday I put an animated gif on a thread titled:
I was just at the 612 unveiling in NYC
Realized my error and replaced it with a jpeg which communicates the same message, yet is 1/5 the size.

The animated image was 41.63 kb, the jpeg is 8.3 KB.

If I need to edit my text, I do so. Same goes for deletion, for whatever reason that may be. One F-Chatter who would benefit from deleting posts early and often is the author of this thread.

I'm on another site where there is no time limit to edit or delete posts or topics. Granted, the average IQ on that site is higher than most any address, be it "fixed" or internet.

At the very least, the "edit" function just came in handy, as I had two closing tags surrounding one word. Just to keep the author on his toes, I'll think about "being sneaky" by deleting this entire reply.

I believe strongly that you should NOT be able to delete your post after someone has replied to the thread. It can ruin the continuity of the thread. However, I am fine with deleting the post even days later, as long as there have been no replies to that thread after the post. I am also fine with editing the post forever... as long as after there has been a reply to the thread, the post is noted as edited at a particular time.

The issue is this: people can trap other people into looking bad (or worse) by saying something to illicit a reaction and then changing what they said, completely changing the interpretation of the reaction. Now if the post is marked as edited after the response, then the reader can judge accordingly.

An auxiliary issue of the above: if you know the post you are responding to can be deleted or invisibly edited (edited without notation), then you will protect yourself by quoting the post each time. This results in silly and annoying duplication of posts consuming disk space and bandwidth.

    JMHO.

I find it a little strange that a person who posts under a Nom de Plume and has zero information in their Profile even brought this subject up ;).

60 minutes to delete or edit works for me (but agree it should be non-changable/deletable afterwards).
