I'm looking for pictures of the plane inside the Fiorano race track. I believe it to be a Starfighter.

BTW: What's the history of it?

There is a recent thread on this plane in the new or old board. Would suggest a search.
In the meantime, what I can remember is that it is a red Lockheed F-104 Starfighter given to Ferrari by the IAF, and was used in one of those car (Ferrari) races jet promotions in Italy.

This month's Air Forces Monthly magazine has the "swan song" of the Starfighter. The last one is painted red, number 999, with a prancing horse on the tail (for the Italian fighter ace, not really Ferrari). It is for the new Ducati 999. Great way to go out.

The Italian Air Force really showed the Italian colors for Ferrari and Ducati throughout the Starfighter career.

What does the Starfighter and a Ferrari have in common?

    * they both need lots of fuel
    * They both may or may not start in the morning
    * They both may leave you stranded away from home

    * When they do work it is a BLAST!

Thanks everybody for posting the pictures and comments. Much appreciated.

However I never trust a picture from MarkPDX, he is just too darn good with Paintshop...

F104, First plane to break the speed of sound while traveling vertically!

Basically a great big engine, with accomodations for a pilot, fuel, wings and a tail.

    Mitch,

I love your description of the 104. If I recall it is referred to as the "missle with a man in it". Kelly Johnson designed it, the U2, SR-71, P-38 and Constellation for Lockheed. In my opinion, his planes are the most beautiful. Aviation's equivalent to Ferrari's lines

    Fyi.

US pilots christened it the "Widowmaker".

But it didn't stop them wanting to fly it.!

You're killing me . 68 . Cold ? I'd trade for that in a heartbeat with what's going on here now . Possible 2 feet + by tonight. I wonder if I can fit snow tracks on the Mondial ? :)
    Enjoy the Grand Opening !

On Mark's profile shot of the 104, I couldn't help but notice the skid marks leading up to the plane. Must have been one hell of a landing!
