    I tried to change my user profile, but where it says to click "here" it doesn't function.

    It's probably disabled- most sites don't allow you to change your username once you've registered.

    Where you can choose for example whether smilies are on or off, where I can enter my profession etc.

    Underneath the title banner, click "User CP".
    Then click on "Options" for things like what order you want to see posts, or click on "Profile" for things such as your occupation or your cars.
