My daughter pointed out to me today that the "Prancing Horse" is not really prancing, it's actually rearing.

Amazing how animals always find the high-traffic areas to plop down...

I never liked the word "prancing" anyways. Sounds like something a gay ballet dancer does.

No offense to any gay ballet dancers out there.

is that in fact a proper translation of the word "rampante"?

maybe it's a more complicated word that doesn't quite translate well from italian? i just checked my wife's italian books, and one of them (fwiw) seems to imply that rampante is a derivative of a word (rampa?) that means "flight".

maybe the original cavallino rampante (the baron or general or whoever he was) was in fact based on one of those performing, trained horses, that most certainly do "prance".

The word rampante means rampant (as in rearing hind legs). rampa means flight (as in flight of stairs). So John B's daughter is exactly right.Cavallo rampante ( Rampant Horse). Dont know where prancing horse originated from.

What I meant by that was, I dont know where the word prancing came from. In Italy they call it cavallo rampante which is rampant horse. Here in America it somehow was translated to prancing horse instead of rampant horse.

Hey, can't a 225 lb. "man" be a ballet dancer? Do I HAVE to be gay too? ( or is that mandatory )

Now I wonder how those little shoes would work at Road America ?

    John,

Your daughter's correct. The horse is rearing, although I've never seen a horse rear on one hind leg. Also a horse rearing generally positions its tail downward.

I have seen circus horses prance. It's rough on their fetlocks but they can do it for short periods.

Anyway, it's just an emblem and still looks nice.

And from here on the ranch, there is only one reason a horse raises it's tail! LOL

The salesman who sold me my car warned me about this issue as I left town. Know what? I found out soon enough.

I have read Enzo turned the tail UP to differ from the Stutgart emblem.
That emblem was a WW1 trophy from a downed plane, cut out by the Italian ace that shot it. His parents gave it to a young Enzo.

Therefore the horse on the F cars and P cars is really THE SAME HORSE.

If you can believe any thing anymore. I believe I'm going for a beer. TTFN

Just a follow up post which might be of some interest. My horse rears on occasion (I hate when that happens, something spooked him). Here are some horses you all will recognize rearing on command:
