Not the best, but most fun:
When you leave the wash station, rev to 5000 rpm, put it in first gear and smoke all that water from the tires :)

Maybe its somethijng with the tires?
Theres nothing wrong with hanging a car sideways leaving a lot. I wish i could do that, but my TL-S is fwd, so i have to get my jollies by yanking the e brake to get the back way way out.
At this carwash you speak of therer must be some sort of a traffic light nearby. You could wait for the light to change and then leave slowly. still, learning how to drive is the best remedy for this situation.

btw, nice post allan. im still cracking up about it.

this reminds me of the guy with the IS300, with new tires, armour all'ed them - side wall and tread - took it out in the rain, with traction control and abs off (IIRC) and spun it into a tree. ugh.....

Curious, if a neighbor etc telephones the police about the sliding/skidding
around in a parking lot, what excuse do you use? What do the cops generally do?

As fun as it might be, I have a hard time believing that you need THAT much throttle to accelerate on the highway considering you are driving a car with 375hp and can do 0-60 in about 4.5 seconds. Just let up on the throttle!!

The 355 has great traction. If you are spinning the tires and did not have the same problem with a tail happy Porsche that means you are not driving the car right. Plain and simple.
If you have to accellerate hard to get into traffic wait a few more moments till a bigger gap opens up.

If you lost it once that is forgiven. Losing it twice is not being careful but doing it 3 times not.....you are asking for trouble and asking for these comments you have received.

Reminds me of the idiot yesterday at Sebring. Pushing it hard into turn 17 with his Hyundai. Brake rotors glowing, at the edge of losing control. He pushed it a little more the next time, a little more the next time and BANG he lost it and crashed that thing into the tires causing good damage. I asked him: "So what was it?" His reply: " I don't know..."

    HIGH SPEED DUMBARSE!

    Benedict,
here is a word of advise:

getting a feel for a car anywhere, be that track or road will start from slow to fast, not fast to slow.
If you lose traction you are too fast.
You never want to practice what the breaking point of your car is on the road. Go to a track event that has nice long run-off areas and "test" the limit of your car there. You can not do harm to others.

driving school is a great thing. I am sure they have one in your area. It will get you the insight into driving dynamics. It makes you a better driver.

Having $10 in your pocket and being able to do a few multiple choice questions does get you a drivers license but does not make you a good driver.

Take my comments as constructive criticism.
They may come about harsh but are meant positively!

Hey, Onto: i took my first ferrari to Floyd Bennett field in Brooklyn (essentially an abandoned airfield of some fame in the 1930's). I was doing figure 8's and decreasing radius loops when a Federal Parks officer came roaring up with red lights blazing. He asked me what i thought i was doing, and i told him i was "practicing." He shrugged and left me alone.

Benedict: I think you'll find most people here pretty receptive, but there is a low tolerance for trolls, due in part to past experience. I think your problem is not just a "water" problem but a "slime" problem: the combination of soap, tire dressings, and assorted other **** that is used at car washes creates a slippery film. I would think that if you are making a 90 degree turn out of a driveway covered with this slime, you're gonna let loose. The trick, as nearly everybody here has said, is to be a bit less punchy on the throttle. And, their advice regarding driving school is not just meant to demean; you'll learn a huge amount, especially if the car is set up to reveal all the bad habits you have acquired driving cars that are designed to disguise and compensate for less than perfect driving. I spun out constantly at Skippy B. until i learned that technique must come before the speed.

I have no problem with constructive criticism. However, telling me this is the stupidest question ever posted without an iota of assistance doesn't do anyone any good. Others have stated they have experienced similar problems so how is this unique to me? I'm not going to be baited into personal invective particularly by a "master-baiter" like Ellen.

"Whenever I leave my local hand car wash, I mark my departure with a wicked fishtail right across the highway. I have almost racked up the car three times like this. Does this happen to others? Anthing I can do other than sit there and wait for the car to fully dry?"

C'mon, are you being serious with this question?

If you are, which I'm having a hard time believing,
Then you need to start taking the bus.

Getting a car sideways on a public road, on more than one occasion is asking to be charged with a crime. If you did lose control and hurt someone, you'd deserve whatever you got. That sort of behavior is usually reserved for teenagers, and we don't let them get away with it for too long. If you have this need to show off, do it on the track, take a course, but don't put other people at risk.

Get a 4wd Porsche or learn to feather the throttle so you don't oversteer as much

Do you think the guys at the wash care if dirt on the towel gets rubbed all over your paint?

Let loose a good 15-second burnout in the parking lot to burn that stuff off first. Fill those wheelwells with thick smoke and don't be shy.

My chevy prizm has the same problem. You know what I'd do? Bring a hair dryer with you and dry off the tires and the pavement before you leave.

    Well Ben,
    you have gotten your answer.
Light on the throttle and a driving school (should be mandatory for Ferrari owners anyhow) (actually thinking should be mandatory for ALL drivers on public roads).

Dave, as a new Ferrari owner and driver, at least I am humble enough
to seek pointers and advice from those with more experience than me.
Do I deserve abuse for that or is this one important function of this forum, to learn from each other? Wouldn't it be tragic if another newbie looked over this hostile thread and became too intimidated to ask what was generally perceived as "a stupid question". I don't think anyone wants such a "chilling effect" on a valuable resource like F-Chat.
