Well I got a little further along on the 308 rack and pinion this weekend.
I had pulled the rack last week before the weather got ****ty,
and since have installed the quick steer unit from superformance.
Repacked the gear and all seems well.

geeze DAVE, i think your car is going to be the nicest one in existance! its great that you take the time to put all this on the board where it will be hopefully forever for others to learn from. heck all your photos are half the reason i started the "beater" 308 thread, i may as well get a car and take it all apart and "restify " it to modern standards. thanks again for raising the bar. think of all the old worn out ( dirty) cars with nothing more than shiny paint out there!

    "Superb pictures. Thanks a lot."

Now just think if we still lived in the stone age,
it would have cost more to develop all the film for the pictures than it would to do the service on the Ferrari...
Boy I love my Canon EOS 10D digital camera!

    Dave,
Any chance you've got & could post pix of the rack end of one/both of the tie rods?

Also one of the tie rod screwed into the rack before the boot is installed?

I'm trying to help DJ Geck with her steering rack problem & while I know how it goes together, she doesn't & a couple of Pix could save a lot of words.

BTW, I'm very interested in how this changes the steering responsiveness. Also if it changes the turning radius.

    Requestingly,

I will try and get to it...
I would have taken some more in detail,
but packing grease and nice clean digital cameras don't mix.

    Dave,
Great stuff, thanks for posting! Curious,...does the rack body have any rubber bushings internally, or at each end to support rack "piston" (geared portion of rack) within the body?

Dave, the piston is supported at the opposite end by an internal bushing.
Mine was still in good shape so I decided not to mess with it.
The phillips head screw that I painted over must be removed for replacement.

Here is a shot of where the rod end connects to the end of the piston...
