I'm going to reset the poll now since you can now see what the avatars look like and with the info you can now post up to a 640 by 640 picture in your profile too.
Now that I enabled avatars and you can see how it works I want to revote. This also allows up to 640 by 640 pictures to be uploaded to your profile. The speed seems good, so I'm even changing my vote.
Someone that know more about graphics than me might talk about what format will show up the best. Either jpg, gif, or png? Someone might want to try png. Also make sure the image you upload is square or it will distort.
Are you planning on making it so that we can have profile pictures w/o avatars? Seems like they will become a necessary evil, then? --Dan
Dear god, no, please! That's the last thing I need, 800 animated gifs in every thread. Ferrarichat is already way too slow to use as regularily as I once did to put it quite bluntly. The features are getting out of hand.
I think I'm really really liking the avatars. See, I don't know the best right off the bat, I listen and then experiment to find what's best. A very personal touch, I wish everyone would have a post of their car or of them and the car, however, I imagine Dave and others will be doing bouncing boobies. Oh great!
I'm not noticing any performance hits so far, it's only 80 by 80 images and the default is only 15 posts per page, so it ain't that bad. Anyone know if there's a way to disable animated gifs in vB3?
I've seen other boards that have avatars that are not slow. Check out www.corner-carvers.com or autopia.org both use avatars. Also, I think in your User CP, you can disable the viewing of avatars if you think it will slow down/clutter your view. Dom
rock and roll, rob! the avatars are superb! i love that they show in the member list too -VERY cool. and the profile photo is key. absolutely stellar. and if someone doesn't like it, they can shut off the avatars. woo hoo! happy doody! doody. PS: and no distortion on non-square. as for "sharpening" apps like photoshop and photodeluxe and their ilk have that capability.
I'm with Rob on this one. I voted NO, but now that I see that they are small I think it is a good idea. Besides, with out them I can not tell you all apart, especially since we are missing people's real names. This gives me a way to identify users. Luke.
wow, nice work. Thanks Rob - I think the avatars are great! If people don't like them, they can disable them in their user menus. It also gave me a chance to use Aug's cool pic of his deck lid.
rob - at the risk of annoying mr. huber - you can set a policy about the avatars. for example, on AVSForum, you can ONLY post an avatar that is in fact a picture of you. and the moderators can apparently strike down avatars that do not adhere. so you could say "car content only" or "nothing lascivious", ahem and that's that. doody.
Will, man, that's what I didn't want people to do! It cheapens the site has nothing to do with you personally.
If you give the option to turn off avatars and signatures, then okay. Other boards have had some problems with LARGE signatures.
