My horn wire got pinched & broke off, so I need to remove the steering wheel to fix. Anyone know of the tool to remove the funky nut under the horn? I found this on http://tools.baumtools.com/, but they want $81.44 for it - Seems a little steep for a socket! Tool # FR105 Does anyone know of a better low cost solution? Thanks Dave - I like the instruction manual! The allen head bolts are not the problem, I got the steering wheel off ok - I should have been more specific - Under the horn, is a strange nut - I tried to indentify it using your pic of the manual : Image Unavailable, Please Login
You'll need to fabricate or buy a ring nut socket to get the hub off (I bought that Baum one myself). Do a search on "ring nut socket" at the old FChat site if you want to invest your time rather than money in a solution
Thanks - True, mine doesn't come off after just removing the allen bolts - I need another tool, thanks - I'll start searching.
Thanks - I did the search & found this thread : http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/256120/2218.html I think I've read it before. I'm off to Home Depot at lunch to buy the socket & then busting out the dremel tonight if I have time - I'll post the results when I fabricate a tool, MacGyver style! Where is this guy when you need him? Image Unavailable, Please Login
A tip: The regular Baum tool is such a tight fit inside the colum that it cuts the horn wire (ask me how I know). To avoid this, double the horn wire over & stuff the contact & wire back down inside the groove where it comes up past the ring nut. The wire has to be all the way into the groove. After re-installing the ring nut you'll have to fish the wire out again. (Try tieing a length of dental floss to the bent end of the wire, It's strong enough to fish the wire out with, & thin enough that it won't get cut.) If I ever have to pull the ring nut again, I'm going to chuck the ring nut tool in my lathe & turn the o.d down by 2-3mm & also bevel the edge. Don't know how tightly Carmen's home made 'Home Depot' tool fits into the shaft, but suspect it's not got this problem. The tool is only about the the diameter of the ring nut: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/256120/251088.html
