hey guys i'm new to the board and my name is will...i have a mitsubishi 3000gt vr4 and i love the sound of ferrari's...anyway i went to the custom exhaust shop near my house and they told me if i want this sound to buy a ferrari muffler and they will put it on...so i was wondering where i could buy these mufflers...i heard that tubi is a very nice muffler...how much do these normally run.. I think they are probably really expensive so is there somewhere i could buy stock ferrari mufflers.. .and is it likely that they will fit my car.
    thanx in advance

    Bane, welcome to the board.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the sound of a ferrari is not made by the exhaust itself. Tubi does have applications for japanese cars such as the Honda/Acura NSX, but I've heard it in person and it does not even come close to a Ferrari with Tubi.

I would stick with japanese manufacturers for your 3000GT. I believe you can look for Apex'i, HKS, Greddy, or a number of others. Whoever told you that you could get a sound of a ferrari just by buying an exhaust may be jerking your chain a bit...

    Hi Will,
    Welcome to our board.
I am a previous 3000gt vr-4 owner. I played with the car quite a bit and had a great time owning it. Later I moved on to my first Ferrari. I'm on my second now. Now, on to your question:
Have you already investigated the effect that a non-stock muffler will have on the mechanism that opens and closes the exhaust baffles of this car? It does has variable exhaust baffling correct? I beleive mine did. This is only available on the VR-4 editions if memory serves me crroectly. I'd leave as is until I knew the answer to this question.
If it is not a factor, I'd do as advised by BMYTH-FDC and go with one of the multitudes available for your car. The manufacturer of the muffler won't make your car sound like a Ferrari. The sound is actually generated "upstream" of the muffler. Your car makes big power, you should be able to get Big Sound from it, if that is your quest. I did a custom muffler system on my old 308QV. It sounded terrific! You may consider this as well.
Or, you could do as I did, just get the ferrari! They're not as $$$ as you might think!
    Best of luck.
    Jeff

Stay far, far away from that shop. Your car might catch something. ;)

Your twin turbos eat your exhaust "note" long before it reaches the cat, much less the muffler.

If you want to sound like a Ferrari, you'd have to lose the turbos, add six more cylinders, ...

    Or just buy a Ferrari.

Or put a recording of a Ferrari in the stereo and turn it up loud. ;)

I have a 92 VR4 also, its my rain car for the track, Mines all tricked out with around 500 hp, it has an HKS exhaust but I might remove that so I can just run supertrapps so I can have a wide open exhaust when I want it. They are fun cars & good looking too. I have to put a real cage & a fuel cell in mine next, its a bit too crazed for the street now :)

    Hey Ricers Rule!

there are a lot of Ricers here to help you out. every other thread is about putting Fart Cans on their Red Ricers. then they like to sit around comparing Red Ricer Fart Can sounds (smells?). Good group

one of their sponsors is a Ricer Fart Can specialist, give them a call,

    Ha ha...yeh ricer rules....

I also own Jap cars....R34 GTR, EVO and stuff... to tell the truth, F-car can't match the traction these 4WD turbo machines from hell can generate.

If you want sound from your VR-4, all you can do is to change the exhasut system...but it will be mostly booming sound..not wailing like F-car. My EVO, which I used for gymkhana race and track day only, has straight through pipe and it's loudddddd...but it's nothing compare to my brother's F360+Tubi....

My R34 also has HKS exhaust with no cat...but all the noise it makes is pretty much..nothing... If you want a Ferrari's sound...get a Ferrari..

I owned a 93 VR4 and did considerable work to it. I used an ATR downpipe and ATR hi-flo cat with a Greddy Cat-back. Sounded way better, but the Greddy is a single 4" pipe on the back rather than the stock look of 4 tailpipes. I went for performance over the stock look.

I owned a VR 4 until I traded it for my Ferrari 308. I had a Hennessey Motorsports Stage 3 upgrade that included a performance computer chip, a K&N air filter, and a custom exhaust. Raised the hp to about 375 from the factory 300. I loved the sound. And, when it did come time to trade, I was able to sell the exhaust for about 50% of what I paid for it.

Was the sound even close to the of a Ferrari? Not really.
