So my GT4 decides to punish me for spending way too much time on the 911 this week. Yesterday I took the Ferrari to work and on the way home the speedo crapped out. It is now showing 140 MPH while the car is sitting in the garage. It will still move if the car moves but my math is bad and I can't mentally subtract 140 from the indicated speed all the time - not to mention the speedo only goes to 160 or so.

Before I tear into it, what are some hints?

I hate tearing into this dash, it is not the most elegant designs.

You are saying it reads 140mph with the car turned off, ignition off? If so, then likely the speedo, but just to be sure, I would unplug the sender off the transaxle just to be sure...and see if it drops down when unplugged.

The last time I pulled the speedo, opened it up, I noticed that the needle just pulled write off and can be positioned any where. Maybe I'll do that again this time. Palo Alto Speedo is great and all, but ... i am a DIY and they tend to think I am made of money.

Damn-it man, can't you see your caught in a space time rift...
You need to pull the barillium chips and re-seat the flash module...

So I guess that it stays at that speed even with the power disconnected. Does it appear to be more an internal mechanical problem?

Mine did the EXACT same thing, and I pulled it out to send it to Palo Alto speedo last week, thinking that it was hopelessly busted. When I pulled the speedo out of the dash (turning it upside down in the process) the needle just plain fell off. I opened the case, pushed the needle back on and with a reassuring "snap" it popped right onto the spindle and works fine now. Only thing is that I goofed and set it to 0 MPH not 10 MPH. Of course, everyone knows that Ferrari speedos read 10 MPH when not moving, so now I have a built in 10 MPH error (it says 50 when I'm going 60.) I would love to know why they DO that. Just another weird Ferrari thing I guess. ANyway, I'm not taking the instrument panel apart AGAIN just to fix that. The heck with it!

Ferrari autos always look fast standing still.

Funny, mine was 10 MPH off (just like yours) before it went the other way and now 140 MPH off.

Shoot, looks like I have to tear into that dash again. What a pain in the butt. The worst design for a dash. Why can't they have it like Porsche 911, the guages just pull out from the front.

While in the dash, don't forget to replace all the light bulbs if they haven't already been changed. Also, if you remove the steering wheel, it's a good time to replace the six little hex screws which attaches it.

I just did all the above on my '76 308 while waiting for the speedo to be repaired.

Yelcab, sorry just joking, i.e. you have left the car up on the jack and thus the rear wheels are not touching the ground ... :) :)

And remember if you put it in reverse on the jack, the mileage doesn't go down (proved in Ferris Bueler's Day Off!)
