Hey, so working hard on this Friday morning, and out of no where, this new icon pops up by my clock on the lower left corner. Looks like that Java emblem, so I click on it and the box below pops up. Never have seen this before, and I am pretty tight on what is loaded on my puter here at work. What is this? Should I keep it or lose it? Any ideas?
    TIA

You probably installed something that used the Java engine...no big deal. (And it would be on the Mac as well...)

I have a problem too. Some virus / program is installed on my computer. Everytime I restart, it sets my homepage to some porn site, adds a dozen porn links to my favorites, and every so often (without warning) Internet Explorer will open up and go to several porn sites. I've run adware and spyware blocking programs, but this thing is still alive. Any ideas how to delete it?

Funny thing, since I posted, the icon by the clock has now gone away, but the Java thing is still on the start menu. Thanks for the help.

That's the Sun Java Virtual Machine console. Microsoft shipped one with Windows XP, but some software requires the Sun VM. It's used more or less as a go-between for applications written in Java. Nothing to worry about.

You just installed the Sun JVM plugin for IE and your system. No big deal at all, its used to start and run all applets on the system and anything else Java related in your Web Browser. You can go back to using the old Windows VM by unchecking a box in the IE properties window.

Should not effect anything you are doing at all.

redhead, if you want, you can mess around with the java settings under Options, Advanced in Internet Explorer. And there ought to be some options in Control Panel as well. But nothing to worry about really.

zjpj, there's all kinds of sneaky adware out there. Not all spyware cleans up all of them. What you need to do is find some keywords and do a google search for "uninstall keywords" or "uninstall url" or something like that. For instance, I had these annoying MySearch toolbars installed and my homepage kept getting reset to some url. I did a search for "homepage reset to " and was able to find instructions on how to uninstall the application that was doing it. It had been very sneakily named something completely different.

PM me with specifics if you need more help. Probably easier to guide you over the phone than with emails, so include your phone number...if you like, of course.

    Rgds,
    Faisal.
