Karen and I are going on our house hunting trip to Shanghai next month, and are taking the long route through Paris. I've got a 3 day layover. Any recommendations on a place to stay. Not looking for the Ritz, but a nice boutique hotel on the moderate side.

    Thanks,
    Erik
yep, another round the world trip.

It really depends on what you want to be near. Area around Arc D' sounds great, but so do the constant planes coming into DeGaulle. The Opera area is nice, but easy to see it all. Monmarte is getting cool. So is
Arrondissement 11, was a dive now artsy like Silverlake.

I usually stay near the Eiffel Tower, there is a tiny hotel there that is pretty nice, b&b, can't remember the name, but it is practically at the foot of the tower.

If you have never been Paris is divided up into segments.

In general some virtual hotel tours: http://www.turquoise.co.uk/Paris/Paris_4_star_hotels.htm

The following are going to vary from $120-325 a night for double occupancy. They are the ones I know.

I like the Meridian Etoile for when I want something more Amercain, less provincial. http://www.turquoise.co.uk/Paris/Hotel_Meridien_Etoile_in_Paris.htm

Napoleon is fun, I will probably go there for next fashion week:

    My models usually stay here:

    Heard good things about:

I am actually thinking about getting an apartment in Paris, all the travel I do there. Gotta sublet it when I am not in town though, it is a little pricey to be in Paris.

    Erik,

    May I suggest:

    Hotel Montholon
    15 rue Montholon
    75009 Paris
    tel. 48.24.22.48

I stayed there while attending a previous Paris Air Show.

It's a nice "boutique" hotel, not too expensive and clean/tidy. They include the preverbal continental breakfast.

It is located fairly close to Sorbohne(sp?) University and easy access to ther Metro (subway).

I'll also endorse the Napoleon. Very nice, not too expensive.

Erik, I actually have two hotels that I would highly recommend. Hotel Costes located at 239 Rue St. Honore (right around the corner from the Ritz) in the 1st & Hotel de Vigny located at 9-11 Rue Balzac in the 8th. Hotel de Vigny is a very elegant and quiet establishment. Hotel Costes is quite hip. Both are centrally located and provide above average service. Hotel Costes does not have a web site and here is the site for de Vigny. If you need others let me know. These two I've recently stayed at so they're fresh in my mind. Good luck. http://www.relaischateaux.com/site/us/rc_vigny.html

I'm a big fan of the Bristol, but that's hardly a boutique or moderately priced hotel. Its worth every cent, given that the concierge can get you prime seating at the Grand Vefour, for lunch, and you can take advantage of the indoor nice swimming pool. You might check to see if the 4 $easons is running any deals at the George V; again, a big, luxe hotel, but well worth it, especially at a discount. Among the good little hotels i've done in Paris over the years, the Jeu de Palme on the Il St. Louis, and the Lutece on the same Il; L'Hotel, on Rue de Beaux Arts (?); there is a top flight small hotel, not far from the Arch D' T., at about 1/2 the price of the top hotels there. Also, i think the Hotel near the Palais Royal, which used to be called the Hotel du Louvre, was recently redone. It used to have La Civette, the best cigar shop in Paris, in the lobby. All of these are great locations. Let us know. (Again, i recommend the restaurant Grand Vefour, but you must make the reservation well in advance, and preferably, thru your concierge).
