One needed to be both rich and quick on the bidding to
become the owner of the world’s first production
Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. Long Island car dealer
Juliana Terian’s winning bid of $2.1 million came just two
minutes into the auction at Christie’s in New York on Dec.
    18. Bidding started at $500,000 and shot past $1 million in 65 seconds.

Proceeds from the auction of the silver, 617-hp supercar go to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation that promotes
youth sports programs as a way to solve world problems.

Oh, in case you’re wondering, the SLR stickers at an
estimated $450,000, and the next three years’ allotment for the U.S. market (600 cars) is already sold out.

AutoWeek says 1.2 million in story headline, but also says it got to a million in 65 seconds and bidding stopped after 2 mins at 2.1 million. So looks like a misprint in the stories headline. Either way that a lot, to say you're first on the block.

that's ridiculous. I'm glad the money is going to a good cause, but the car just isn't worth that.

when they first started talking about the car, i was really excited to see it. but now that i've seen the finished product, even if i could afford it, i'd pass. fugly, imo. at least the money is going to a good cause.

"next 3 years sold out" - wonder how many of those waiting are "real" purchasers or flippers hoping to make a buck?

Be willing to bet that most of the "Sold" are dealers themselves selling to their inhouse leasing companies so they can flip them for over list and not show the gouging to MB

Remember, the first 360 spider in the US sold at auction in the neighborhood of $380k. Some people just have to be first on the block. He won't be able to sell it next year for sticker. They're going to make to many of them and MB will laugh all the way to the bank. Sucker.

    Hmmm, let's see here,

    1. Make a charitable donation (through your business, that would have been made anyway).

    2. Keeping yourself in good standing with your country club.

    3. Noteworthy exposure for your dealership.

    4. Plus, have the MBZ-SLR as a fringe benefit to boot?

I'd have to say, "Not bad!"

Exactly....he actually paid about half after the tax deductions....and who knows what else will be on the books.

An SL with the new 600HP/700 ftlb twin turbo V-12 engine will cost about half as much and still give you the same performance numbers.
