When the GT4 was first introduced the carpeted luggage shelf was an "option" in liew of the rear seat (upholstered luggage shelf ;) ). Pictures of a car equipped with the option are in the "Illustrated Ferrari Buyers Guide" by Dean Batchelor. I have never seen one but I think that it would be fun to "re-create" a shelf. The GT4 seat is nothing but a light weight fiberglass molding and I assume that the shelf is the same. As easy as it is to remove the rear seat, one could change it out (or back) almost as easily as dropping the top on a spyder.

I know a F'Chat member who is interested in this car. I hope he can find a way to get it!

In my GT4 registry, I positively know of one that features this shelf and another one I'm uncertain of.

Can't find anywhere in the books that says there are only 6 cars delivered with this package shelf. Only I know it was an option when you ordered a gt4 in the 70's. I have seen a 208gt4 and a 308gt4 with a package shelf in Italy. In our register we have also 3 cars with a package shelf. So I think there are maybe more gt4's with a package shelf.

On the original backseats my 2 kids are transported regulary.
They are 4 and 1 1/2years. I think they can sit there till they are 10 or 12 years.

We went with 3 adults to the Spa Italia days this years (about 100km/60mls). My brother was in the backseats. After 6 months he is still talking about his pain in his back :)

    Ciao,

I found this car in the local news paper two weeks ago and called the owner. He told me the car was originally delivered in Gold/Boxer trim and was repainted about 5 years ago to all red. It appears the color of the car now is closer to Rosso Scuderia that Rosso Corsa. It would be fun to repaint the boxer trim over the red. It really compliments the shape of the car.

Iwas told by the owner that he had other people looking at the car at the time I called. It seems they wern't interested as I received another call from the guy a few days ago. Personally, when considering the mileage on the car (54,000+) I would be more inclined to buy the car for around 22,000 USD, even with the recent service. Just the way the market is these days. Too bad it doesn't have the sun roof too.

For now it's a question of getting my shop built or buying another Fcar. I will have to go with the shop. DANG!

Yes, the luggage shelf was a regular option, but I don't know how often it was specified.
Spasso- Although I always preferred the monochromatic color scheme on Boxers, the GT4 definitely looks better with Boxer paint (see my profile picture). It lowers the car and makes the side view look less bulky, in my opinion. Mine's for sale, by the way, if anyone's interested- now that I bought a 348 Challenge for track use I'm not driving the GT4 at all, and it should go to someone who'll enjoy it.

This is something I've thought about for a while now. My back seats were butchered by the previous owner (wrinkly leather) and this would be a real nice touch to be different. Makes it easier that I don't have any kids. I wonder if Ferrari UK has any in stock?

It's my understanding that the modification was performed by a contracted shop in Marenello. Couldn't hurt to ask Jeff at Ferrari UK.

You might try these fellows. It seems they may have the inside line on hard to get pieces and they are in the 'neighborhood' to boot.

    Ira,
Your car looks good in Boxer. A really nice color combo. I saw an Ivory/ Boxer on the is site and that looked really good too.

I wish I could take you up on the offer.

Spasso- Ivory is an odd color for any Ferrari, although a former neighbor had a solid ivory '75 GT4 (with black interior) that he bought new and had for many years. A bit too sedate for my taste, but elegant and (perhaps too?) low-key. I might've liked it better if it'd had the Boxer paint scheme.
I like the look of mine, but suspect that's also partially due to the 17" wheels and Euro-style bumpers- makes the car look more purposeful which, since I've used it largely as a track event car, makes sense to me. I originally bought it to use as a driver, since I used my 246 GTS for shows, but ended up driving neither of them until I set the GT4 up for the track. Now that I've bought the 348 Challenge car the GT4 is just going to sit around, which seems a shame. Someone should buy it to use as a combination street/track event car- it's been fine for driving to and from the track and for occasional street outings, but the 348C is nicer and serves the same purpose for me, so . . .
Back to the rear shelf question, the GT4 rear seats are pretty marginal anyway, so converting to the optional shelf wouldn't sacrifice much by way of utility, and would certainly increase the luggage capacity.

Those red marks were actually like red duct-tape covering the wheel weights on the original 14" wheels, that the previous owner had put on. You'll notice in the more recent photos that the car now has 16" QV reproduction wheels that I bought from Superformance.

Speaking of those wheels, I had a balancing problem in the front that could not be resolved, no matter where I took the car, even to Wide World of Cars, official Ferrari dealer in Nanuet, NY. Finally found out that Superformance manufactures two small aluminum rings that you tap into the wheel to make the hub mount more perfect, so they sent me the rings and that totally solved the problem...
Superformance says that once in a great while, they have a customer that complains about balancing problems, and that's why they made those rings for those special cases, and they do work.

DJ, Your yellow 78 looks terrific in your profile. I see you have a few 240Z cars. For around 13 years I drove a 77 280Z and and later a 75 280Z. Super cars for the money. Nothing but fond memories of those cars. If not for unavoidable rusting, I would probably still have them.
