    Hello Fellow "F"-Chatters,

Was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to inform me as to what parts will be needed for a Timing Belt and Valve Cover Gskt replacement, aside from the obvious. i.e 2-ea Timing Belts and 2-ea. Valve Cover Gskts., what else might be needed?

I'll be shopping around for parts tomorrow, and would appreciate a shopping list. This Memorial Day weekend is when I attempt the service. I read a nice tread on the above subject by Ric Rainbolt, and thought I'd attempt it myself. By the way during the tread he often refers to "PM" and PM 1-4, what's PM?

    Thanks, Chris.

What year/model/version? (Why isn't this in your Profile!)

    PM = Top Dead Center

PM 1-4 = Piston #1 (and Piston #4) are at Top Dead Center

There's also a PM 5-8 mark on the V8 flywheel.

Are you just changing the timing belts, or are you attempting to perform a 30k maintenance?

    Thanks Steve, It's a 1979 308GTB produced in June of 79.

    Thank you very much.

    Chris.

Chris -- you got 2 out of 3 -- what about version? US?

As Dave J. requested, it would help to know what you're really trying to do. For example, if things are fairly fresh miles/time-wise, but you've got a leaking camcover flat gasket, then I wouldn't mess with removing the camshafts or replace the various lip seals. On the other hand, if you want to do the "whole" 30K thing, I think the list is something like:

    Belts
    Tensioner bearings
    Camcover flat gaskets (both sides)
Camshaft lip seals (4 seals total, but comes as a set now under a single PN IIRC)
    Distributor Mount flat gaskets (2)
    Distributor lip seals (2)
    Distributor Shaft o-rings (2)
Small round camcover flat gasket at the undriven end of front bank exhaust cam area (1 for US, 2 for non-US I think)
Air Pump lip seal (1 for US version only, not used on non-US version)

If you need to rephase the cam drive sprockets then you'll need the o-rings (2) -- but I wouldn't mess with that unless the cam phasing marks were significantly off.

I'd probably also replace the 2 ball-bearings in the AC idler pulley if it has been a lot of miles/years (but that's not required).

Others -- please speak up, correct, edit -- the 308 stuff that I used to know is slowly getting squeezed out of my head by TR stuff ;)

Valve clearance should have been checked at 15k, and again at 30k.
So if you intend to do the recommended 30k service, I would include valve shims to Steve's list.

    Good Luck!
