I guess I think of your question a little differently than who is the best player which is what I think you are asking. for that I think its a toss up between Pele and Maradonna, I don't think Ronaldo or Becks are close. In terms of career I think Dechamps, while no where near the best player, has had an impressive career, one world cup title, one euro title, I think a few French titles, three Italian titles, couple of italian cups, couple of supercup titles, almost got a english title, one fa cup, a champions league title, and later today may also add another champ title as a coach - that is impressive from a career perspective

    Pele by far...

Though my opinion of this is based only on stats and history as I have never seen him play apart from some highlights in old videos. Ronadlo's performances in the World Cup and essential results come in second.

Beckham for professional career. I think I read in USAToday a while back while the talk of him having to go to Barcelona was so rampant, even a little boy in war torn Sierra Leone asked visiting reporters if he had been traded away from Man U. Bringing soccer on a global scale to such proportions is nothing short of amazing.

Though he is still flying up and down the pitch, and I never saw Pele play, I still think Edgar Davids is the most exciting to watch. Have a poll about who has had been the most exciting throughout his career and I would have to say Davids.

Pele is just waaaay above the rest, and Beckenbaur & Maradonna gotta be in the top 3.

Beckenbaur earned the name "Emperor" (in German, but I forgot) at Beiren Munich (sp?). There was also a player named Mueller (sp) and they were amazing. I saw their game in 70's as they came to Japan to play.

Cosmos brings back fond memory, as I used to watch their game again Vancouver Whitecaps.

    Pele(no question)
Ronaldo(could be great but to young and to much injury)
Maradonna(career to short and marred by drugs)
    Cryuff(possible,fantastic)
    Zidane(a strong candidate)
    Beckenbauer(strong also)
Beckham, unfortunately just not good enough and there a lot more candidates before I would even think of him.
K.Dalglish,F totti, franco Baresi,Marco Van Basten,K.H.Rummenige the list is just endless.

I'll be honest with you; I do not follow soccer too closely. My poll choices are of the players that I have heard of as being something special, so I wanted to get a more serious soccer fan's opinion.

Pele is the greatest. I'm looking forward to seeing what Freddy Adu will achieve over the rest of his lifetime. Right now, he just needs to "relax" when he plays, rather than alter his style.

    I agree.

Yes, Baresi, Totti, & Zidane! How could I forget Zidane, especially. I haven't talked of soccer for several years (I have no one around here who gets into soccer) I didn't think Cryuff as the same caliber, but I don't know much about him.

Think about it this way. Brazil has won soemthing like 30% of all world cups ever played and Pele was in about 80 percent of them. That doesn't include all of the times he was in the finals but did not win. That means he has been on the winning world cup team about 20-25% of all ever played.

Zidane, Maradonna and maybe even Roberto Baggio & Batistuta. In their Prime B & B were both pretty damn good.

Franz Beckenbauer was called the "Kaiser", he played at Bayern Muenchen (Bayern Munich). ;)
The bomber Gerd Mueller, he is still the best goalgetter of the german national soccer team (68 goals in 62 games).
