Hello all! This is my first post here. No bashing please. I have a 81 308 GTSi and would like to recess the bumpers about 3-4". I have seen a couple like this and love the look. I removed the rear spacers which brings them in about 1 1/2". I would still like to go in a bit more. The front has no spacers. How can I get this in further. Thanks for any input. Sam
i am about to do this to mine, only the damn euro bumpers i bought dont fit, so i am back to square 1. i belive you drill the shocks in the front and you can push the bumpers in, i think some suggested using a old tire with no rim to act as a cusion, and push them in that way. i am not too sure about the rears, i have not had time to look and see if they need to be drilled or not.none of the hole on the euro bumpers i have line up with the existing mounts..... will update in a day or so when i figure something out. the archives may have some info on this, but i agree the search festure does not always work too well for some topics.
You have to release the pressure in the bumper shocks by drilling a hole in them, and then compact them to the proper length. Or You could install lightweight Euro bumpers that are already of the size you are looking for, which will drop the weight of your 308 by 75lbs. and increase your performance as well as it's looks.
Search function for the archives generally works pretty good, but you need to use the "advanced search" to narrow things down better... Here is one that may be useful: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1479&highlight=308+bumper
The above link shows removal if the bumper shocks (to facilitate painting) but it is not required. I drilled mine in about 10 min laying under the car. After I just pushed them in with a little force and there you have it. I didnt even put a screw in to hold so I can pull them out for concourse.
One thing not yet mentioned on this thread or the referenced one above is the cost of the front sheet metal when some cretin "parks by ear"...$$$4000. Kinda makes your heart go gasp (or left cheek, the one with the wallet, clench a bit). Back to the issue: if the bumper is shoved in, how much is protection diminished. If the car is a daily driver, one must beware those hefty station wagons. If you are quite selective in driving and parking, you might avoid GRIEF. My sympathies are with you bumper shovers, my 77 bumpers shure look ugly. put the pedal down. chris
