After seeing Brian Willis' garage at the Atlanta party in March, I've been thinking about a major makeover for this old "park ferme".

I started with a thorough cleaning of the tired cement floor, getting up as much grease as possible before laying down the very expensive (29 cent) Home Depot self adhering checkered tiles. Then it was some fresh paint all around, including bright yellowy orange on the baseboards (it took three shades of paint to get the color just right). I put some black semi gloss on the stoop and cement edges. After I got that done, it looked great until I started putting all the rakes, tools, cental vac hose and other assorted crap back in the garage.

So Lane suggested building a wall across the back, and that turned out to be the perfect solution. It comes out 4.5 ft and thats just enough room to hide all my junk!

    I love it!

What did you use around the border?

The tiles were self adhesive? Do you think they will pull up?

Nice double doors you added also.

The border is the top edge of the cement block foundation. I just painted it black.

The tiles have held up very well. They've seen lots of water but are holding their ground. I've got a couple of cases of extra tiles that would be very easy to put down in case their needed.

DISCLAIMER - I didn't put the wall in - that was done by someone who actually knew what he was doing!

    Your garage looks super.
I also especially like the "Why Red" licence plate.
You have given some ideas as my garage is just painted concrete.
How are the tiles standing up to oil, antifreeze, or gas leaks?
I have old British cars, and leaking is standard issue

I just used run-of-the-mill latex semi-gloss. The part I painted will never be walked on or worn down, so I just went with the basic stuff.

If this is the same commercial flooring tile from Home Depot that I applied on my garage floor 3 years ago, then I can say that they have held up ok. Leaks are easily cleaned as long as you don't let them sit there for days. The only downside is that over the years, the hot tires will cause slight discoloration. Also, if you turn your steering wheel sharply while the wheels are on the tile, it may cause the tile to shift, creating a small gap (this has only happened once, and it was right after I had installed the tile).

Other than that, they are a great and economical solution.

I'm starting my garage project next Saturday. The wife will be gone, and I'll have nothing better to do! I'll take some before/after photos to see the transformation. I was going to epoxy the floor, but I like the tiles as well. Are they grouted, or just placed close together?
No Ferrari yet, but gotta have a proper home before the baby comes!

29cents a piece right? how many tiles did you use? or is that price per sq? How long did it take? What is that tile called exactly from home depot. How does the tile adhere? Thanks
