There was discussion regarding various F40 sightings on public roads in Australia. From what I understand all F40 cars were left hand drive, and therefore can't be registered for public road use in Australia. How were they able to drive on public roads?

I used to drive mine all the time with dealer plates.
Some other people drive with with temporary permits.
There is talk that LHD cars can be registered in Perth, but I'm not sure what the rules are there...it's like it's not part of Australia, really.

WA has a Classic vehicle category for registration purposes called "Unique and/or Historic". An F40 wouldn't automatically qualify, but would probably have a good chance of being approved by the committee charged with the responsibility. The fact that it is LHD would not be a concern - it's a bit like a club registration with fries.
If there was more than 1 or 2, I guess the "unique" thing falls over a bit.
So, in spite of being 2 or 3 hours, and 10 years behind the rest of the country, it is a fairly progressive environment on this side of the rabbit proof fence, and by the way, we don't have fixed speed cameras :)

ahhhhhhh....but our speed cameras need fixing! They've been out of action for months. Speeding is, apparently, being recorded, but nothing is being done about it until the reliability of them is beyond doubt. You may not have heard that one (needs to be) fixed camera clocked a Datsun 120Y at 170 or something, and a Fox truck at 160.

what's the story with the Nullabor roads ?

I want to drive to Perth next year for the FNR and want to do a high speed run across the plain before all draconian measures destroy any fun.

As for F40 sightings, we will hopefully see more of Bevan's F40 in the future if he ever finishes the RHD conversion to his

Has anyone got the contact details regarding the person doing a right hand conversion of an F40?

Drove across the Nullabor at high speed (maximum we did was 175mph, generally we were at 120 or so) a couple of years ago. No problems, though it got a bit boring after a while. Be prepared to stop every half hour to clean your windshield.

    Hi JM
If you want the full bottle on driving the Nullabor, talk to Ray Gulson or John Lockyer - they drove it to the National Rally in Perth in '98 and are still talking about it!
Apparently they got the drum that if there were 4 cop cars parked in the Eucla police station, they were OK for the next 400 miles - they covered that in less that 3 hours - nice :)
BTW - how's the frontal lobotomy?
    Best

    Hi JM,

Good tip, hope it holds water while I attempt warp speeds in whatever I am driving (Barry's 328 is gone and am unsure of the others available).

I had my last operation (touch wood) on the head 10 days ago and feel OK but they have ruined my good looks and you know how vain I am :)

The stupid thing from all this recovery process is that I NEED a holiday after all this so I might go to the Gold Coast.......:)

If you contact the president of the FCA in Queensland he may be able to help, just go to www.fca.org.au and click on "join the fca" and you'll see Ray Helm's address at the bottom of the page.

He's a very friendly man and will help where possible.

No matter how good, that would be a butcher thing to do

I think Ferrari SpA did build a few factory RHD's, Shyster of Brunei comes to mind as a possible owner

As mentioned on F chat before we got cautioned for 121kph an hour or so into WA on our GT4 trip. No more bugs than anywhere else on the 10500klm trip. And driving is never boring in a GT4.

Ferrari F40s can be registered, and any LHD car in Victoria if the car is at least 25 years old.

Since F40s were built from '87-'92, all models, from the day I post this, that were built before 1990 can be registered with no problems.

What is the rule in NSW. Is it 25 years old or pre 1989 that allows registration.?
