76 Maverick in high school. 79 Mustang ordered from factory in college. I still love the lines of the Maverick & have seen some hot rodded looking pretty good. Not quite the classic to keep though. What did you drive to the prom & after?

since probably next to nobody here drove a FERRARI in high school, this thread really belongs elsewhere on the board.

the family car at the time was a Chevy Monza Spyder. it was entertaining. had a big spider on the hood - not sure that was better than a chicken on the hood though :). might have been a 305? i don't remember. changing the spark plugs involved pulling the block - it's not just ferrari that engineers stuff stupidly!

EDIT: found some pics online. amusing car.

I think I was lucky, I drove a 70 Chevelle SS 454 with M21 rock crusher 4 speed and a 65 Pontiac GTO convertable with 4spd Hurst shifter. The 2 cars are still in the family. My brother has the SS and my dad still has the GTO. Both are pristene show condition and run great.

My first car was a beloved but battered Fiat Spider. I loved that car. It was black with a tan interior. The synchromesh in the transmission had broken up in order to do damage elsewhere, there were rust bubles everywhere, and the end came when the valvetrain gloriously exploded.

My next car was a sensible and reliable Honda Accord. I flogged that car, and drove it into the ground over many years and many miles. That car took me to my high school prom and never let me down. I drove it thoughout college and beyond.

When I got my first real job, I bought one of the last Alfa Spiders in North America: a green and tan job with--get this--a full three year warranty. During those three years I charged a huge amount of warranty claims to Alfa Romeo of North America. I courted my wife in that car, kept great care of it, and in the end sold it to a good friend. The fact that we're still friends says something about that car.

I went to University of Miami for college and you wouldn't believe the cars these kids would come to school in..

The first day of school, a kid came in a yellow Diablo... Probably not his but would you let your son take a Diablo to a very very crowded university parking lot?

Saw Lotus, Ferrari Testarossas, 348, 328, 308, that Lambo, BMW M1 (rare) and of course NSX!!...

Well, I didn't have a car when I graduated from high school (1970). I got a suitcase as a graduation gift instead. (Things were a bit tense around the Spradling household at that time.) (Second note, I rode motorcycles throughout my high school years.)

Let's see, by the time I graduated from FSU in 1976, I had gone through a series of hippie cars. You know, the kind where you didn't have to worry about locking them. (Freedom really is just another word for nuthin left to lose.) Other than a 6 volt, 1964 VW, I don't remember a whole lot. Then again, I don't remember a whole lot about those years. Geeze, anybody remember what was I talking about?

I do remember driving a Chevy II Nova to Houston for my first job with the IRS. I had everything I owned in the truck of that car, and it was only 1/4 full. Talk about a piece a crap. 4 banger with a "TIP" on the column. Getting on the freeway was a trip. I'd floor it, and wring its neck, only to be going, maybe, 55 by the time I got on the freeway.

I brought it for $1,000 bucks (all the money, I hear Keith Martin say) and sold it to an Iranian for $1,000 when I later brought myself a brand new Datsun "King Cab" pickup.

    Ah, glory days. (My ass.)

Just to add to the pain about 10 years driving a Ford Pinto, ask me about the 10+ times it caught on fire (and, no, it wasn't the gas tank).

I am really, really thankful to be able to drive cars where "extinguish fire" is not part of the driving ritual.
