what do you guys recommend for a good aftermarket exhaust for a 78 308. i want something louder than stock but not too obnoxious. also will a later 308 or 328 system fit w/out major modifications?

You're in luck - lots of threads about this available using the search function above on the command bar. The popular ones are:
    Tubistyle
    Stebro
    Ansa
Customs - usually using Magnaflow, Flowmaster or Dynomax as a base
There are some new ones like Capristo, but they are more aimed toward later models.

    Joey,

This may be a $500-$2500 adventure. Seek out other 308 owners close by and have a listen. listen to the owners advice re cost and sound. Additionally, you may need to be concerned about SMOG requirements or emission testing.
I, being the fairly obnoxious, hard core old bast**d that I am, chucked my 77 thermal reactor, changed jets and installed a "low cost" $ 600. flowmaster set up. Sc**w it, I am going for performance and will feather it a bit to keep the local heat off.

    Put the pedal down,
    chris

I have a Magnaflow on my '78. Nicely loud, without being obnoxious. When I wind it up a little in my work enclosed parking deck, I usually set off a car alarm or two - that's gives me a small chuckle.

I run ANSA. Only loud once it became aged, but the actually offer both Street and Competition versions. $1225 for the whole thing, it includes the tips.

You're probably exempt from smog check unless in CA. But Ferrari UK just discovered a cache of catalytic converters. You need two.

Fresh cats and a competiton ANSA and you would be stylin' and profilin', and probably CA legal. Drive out there and get the BAR sticker, jus' to say ya did!

Long and short is that if you remove the cats and stick in bypass pipes, you will get more volume without getting too loud.

If you put a Tubi on with bypass pipes it will be LOUD. Tubi with cats would be loud, but not too; and the Tubi has a higher, nice pitch too. Basically, if you go aftermarket, you will need to retain the cats to keep from being too loud, if that offends you. I kind of liked the sound of my 78 308 GTS with stock exhaust, no cats, and K&N air filter. It made some nice sounds. You can get the test pipes here:http://www.durable1.com/testtubes.htm

You will likely want to richen the main jets with any exhaust or intake upgrades. The USA 78 has very lean (125) main jets. Switching to 135's or even 140's would make a noticeable improvement.

Won't fit. You have twin intakes on your exhaust.....the 308QV (late) and 328 are single (large) intake...
