My timing light (30 years old!!!) bit the dust.

How much has the technology changed and what are people using now for timing lights, as far as brands, that have other 'bells and whistles' besides the light itself?

I have seen a couple that offer built in advance settings, but I'm not sure how this would work with an older car with mechanical advance.

I've just bought one with an adjustable advance setting. Believe me it's worth the extra. What it does is enable you to dial in x number of degrees of advance. This is really usefull if you have only a TDC mark on your pulley/flywheel/whatever.

Also, if you're using it for general fault finding, you can use the adjuster to move the timing mark to the visible arc of the pulley/flywheel/etc when you're checking other cyls.
