nice write up Wolfgang. Napolis is a real inspiration, he has given so much back to us here, when most folks of his means keep the toys locked away. whatever the outcome of 0846, it has beed a real honor to learn so much about a part of ferrari and racing that i never knew existed until i found ferrari chat. 0846 IS 0846 to me. i may not word this correctly, but in a way , i can look at my 308 and "feel" there is more there than glass and metal. one day i hope to see the cars myself!!!
old cars, vintage guitars, and classic firearms , et al, have a aura of history about them, and the folks that made them by hand, that all this new gee- whizz computer crap made these days lacks. its cool to be a part of something so special!

For all of you experts why are the rims painted blue at the outer edge? The answer is interesting.

Not that I would claim to be 'an expert' ....
But I believe it was so that when wheels were removed from the 'customer' team's cars (412P's) belonging to N.A.R.T., Maranello Concessionaires and Ecurie Francorchamps, that the factory could differentiate between them, and any spare (or removed) wheels belonging to the Work's P4's (which were painted gold overall).

    By the way, Jim ....
I would have thought you might have at least rebuked Carbon for his choice of title for this thread. Surely THIS is 'defamatory and actionable' ? LOL !

I thought there was another reason - at least on the 1950s sports racers where the front tires weren't that much smaller than the rear tires. The team would paint the front Borrani rims yellow and the rear rims blue so that a rear tire would not be accidentally placed on the front in a pit stop . . .

In 1967 0850, the Francorchamps car, was painted yellow with blue wheels; but it ran with P3 Dunlop wheels in the rain at Spa (because the narrower rims were better in the rain, according to what the then-owner, Paul Pappalardo, told me in 1997) - but those were blue as well.

And the NART car, 0844, was red at Daytona and Monza in 1967, and I believe had red P4 wheels for both races before it became white/blue for Le Mans.

The Maranello Conc. car, 0854, had pale blue on its wheels, and the Filipinetti car, 0848, had white ones IIRC.

About the Ford Mk 4s' spare wheel - wasn't there a rule that it had to be removed, touched on the ground and replaced at every pitstop at Le Mans, which meant lifting the engine cover on Ferraris, whereas the Fords' could be removed through a slot in the tail?

Oh, and I DO, Jim - EVERY word ! That's why my response to Carbon in post #2 reads exactly the way it does - as opposed to an alternative 'snappy' reply that may have sprung to mind, when I first read the title of the thread !

The trap door. You got it. In racing every second saved adds up.

    Correction, Paul ....
At both Daytona (#26) and Monza (#9), #0844 ran with Dunlop (P3 pattern) wheels, which appear to have been sprayed a very light metallic blue colour. I would post a couple photos for you, but you know how it is .....

Actually, I don't have this one scanned anyway, Paul ....
But if you've got Ferrarissima #4 (Ferrari vs. Ford 1963-1967) - turn to page 8, where you'll find there's a full page colour photo of #0844, on the Daytona banking, showing the wheel colour.

I am aware of a guy in Sweden...who has a genuine 1954 Porsche Spyder.
Well...if he could just claim that some parts of that Spyder where from James Deans car....Thank God...he is a down to earth guy....and he knows his Spyder is worth millions anyway.
