We just came back from BJ's Wholesale Club where we spent $20.00 on each can (1lb 9.7 oz) of Similac baby formula. A case of six cans runs $120.00 and lasts about two weeks. Where can I buy this stuff cheaper? With the cost of diapers and baby formula I am going broke quickly.

    Thanks.

So you want to go cheap on your baby?!? Lol, Im just joking ;)

I honestly had no idea that baby formula would be so expensive! I really am surprised. Makes me wonder what ingredient could make it that expensive...

The ready to feed in 8 oz cans is the MOST expensive. I suspect that's what you purchased. You should consider getting the powder that you mix with tap water. Hopefully one of the nurses from the hospital where your baby was born (or the mid-wife if born at home in the pool) can shed a lot of light on the many expenses of having a newborn.

I found a website that offered a comparison (using 2001 figures) of the different types of formula vs breastfeeding.

    " Cost per year1
    Breastfeeding (200-500 kcal/d) $300

    Formula:2
    Powder (1 lb can) $1,188
    Concentrate (13 oz can) $1,512
Ready to feed (32 oz can) $1,728
Ready to feed (8 oz cans, 4 pack) $2,376

Yep, there's nothing like getting it right from the tap :)

However, I do a formula feeding once a day for my baby, and I just priced out some formula.

Yep, $20-22 for the large can of powder (either enfamil or similac). But, I did notice that lots of stores carry a generic brand for about $13.

Since I only do once a day, I am sticking to the enfamil brand, but it's tempting to get the generics at almost 1/2 price. I mentioned it to my wife once, and she gave me the guilt trip about feeding my son generics...

I work in the pharmaceutical industry, and I know that at least with drugs, there is no difference between the brand name and the generics. I imagine it must be the same with these baby formulas. So, if you are really concerned about the price, go for the generics.

The can I purchased was the powder mix that you need to add water to. At $20 per can (1lb 9 oz), it is expensive. As already mentioned, the premix stuff costs a lot more.

Bruce: Tiffany has been breast feeding for the past several weeks, but she stopped yesterday. She will be returning to work next month and does not want milk shooting out at the kids in school.

If I purchase a generic formula, my wife will freak and I will never hear the end of it. The only saving grace is that Neiman Marcus does not sell baby formula.

We have 4 kids, and they were all milked (?) with Similac powder or canned milk between 1990 to 2002. With diapers, we averaged about $300 to 400 every month per kid for their first few years. Most purchases were made at Sam's or Costco. ToysRUs sometimes had a good sale. We had a change bed so we could stock up things in its shelves. These spending will slow down somehow later, but it will jump up again as they start going into teens!

Enjoy the process as it will be somehow fond memory later. (well at least for me) Good luck!

Clip coupons from the Sunday Paper. Go to store that honors Double Coupons.
That will lower cost of Diapers and Formula.

Get a Breast Pump. Follow instructions. Not you - her.

When I was in the grocery racket, baby items received the highest % markup.

Interesting, Ken. Let's do some math.

As you say, a can is 1lb 9.7 oz, or 25.7 ounces. A case of six cans would then be 6 x 25.7 oz = 154.2 ounces.

Each SCOOP of powdered formula is 0.3 ounces. So 154.2 ounces of powdered formula is actually 514 SCOOPS of powder.

One scoop of formula powder is added to each 2 fluid ounces of water to make the formula. So that's 1028 fl. oz of liquid, ready-to-feed formula, per six pack of cans.

If, as you claim, you did feed your baby six cans in just two weeks, that's 1028 fl. ounces over 14 days, or 73.43 fluid ounces per day.

A very healthy bottle for a 3-6 month kid would be 4-6 ounces. Let's call it 6 ounces, for this calculation's sake. At 73.43 fluid ounces per day, that means your baby is drinking over 12 bottles daily. Which would be astounding, as most babies in that age range take only 4-6 bottles.

Keep in mind that for most kids, a standard can of powdered formula will last anywhere from 1-3 weeks. You're using a can every 2 days?

Wow, your baby must be HUGE.

    vty,

    --Dennis

Get to know a formula rep/salesman, LOL. My wife used to work as a neonatal nurse and knew the reps and we got our formula for our daughter free.

Other than that, probably a wholesale club like Sam's or Wal-MArt are the cheapest.

It is just the beginning of how much the little munchkins cost.
