Does anyone have a feel as to how a 308gt4 or 308 would compare to up against a Lamborghini Urraco. I am mostly interested in your thoughts on maintenance, reliability, parts availability.

    Thanks

Lambo is rarer. You have to drive both to see which one is for you. F will cost less. esp. parts. If you prang Lambo body parts will really cost.
Urraco's look great in white and handle well.

EVO magazine recently did a comparison of Uracco vs 308 GTB vs I think 911. They basically said that when they talked about Uraccos to Lamborghini specialists, they all said "don't buy one". They loved the car, but because the market values (in the UK at least) are well below a GTB they are uneconomic to restore and there are quite a number of dogs around.

Same problem can affect the GT4 - I owned a GT4 in the early 90s and paid 17K GBP for it when the previous owner had spend 30K plus restoring it in the late 80s when it had an insurance approved value of 45K. With either a GT4 or a Urraco you need to find one that is loved. Don't under any circumstances (unless you really are a mechanic) buy one that needs some work.

My GT4 really was in fabulous condition - I sold it after 3 years for the same as I had paid for it.

This month's Car and Driver has a little write up on the Urraco from driving a restored one, and the comment that sticks out most to me is the following:

"with a miniscule V-8 buzzsawing behind your back, the Urraco feels like a Baja Bug."

Basically the rest of the write up talks about the trials and tribulations that the car had during it's short life. They didn't care for it too much.

Have you considered a Jalpa? More available and not as much of a problem as the older U's can be.

Everything I've read about the 60's and 70's era Lambos talks about really poor build quality and questionable engineering. Even Alan would probably admit the Espada, Uracco and Jalpas were not very good cars compared to the similar Ferraris of the time. Even the beloved Miura had a lot of problems which are addressed upon restoration. No one wants a concourse Miura for a driver.

Side note...I was surfing around on the Internet last night and Lamborghini owners and Ferrari owners just seem to 'look' different in many cases. Now before you guys jump on me for this, it is a statement made from looking at pictures of Ferrari and Lamborghini owners and their cars, and by no means is it conclusive, just an observation. Most of the Lamborghini owners that were pictured with their cars were kind of...ummm....from what I like to call the 'Gold Chain Mafia'. By this I mean they had the dark tan, shirt unbuttoned, with gold chains exposed, or were just kind of the burly type. (I am serious...it was spooky.) The Ferrari owners on the other hand seemed to be more conservatively dressed, slacks, nice shirt (buttoned up!), and just not as flashy. I know that sounds weird...and their are exceptions to every rule, but I just noticed it last night and this 'Ferrari vs Lamborghini' thread reminded me of it....feel free to wear your gold chains to prove me wrong. :D

Really? Thats funny. Ive searched the internet many times and have never found a pic like this. Could you direct me to link? It sounds to me like you got it confused with a Ferrari owners club meeting.

As for the Uracco and Gt4, id skip both and buy a Jalpa or 308.

Not true. The Jalpa is a fantastic alternative to a similar 308. Lets face it, all early L and Fcars were pretty much $hitbombs in terms of quality.

There is a great period article in a mid 70s R&T available in all the 308 collections available with a 3-way comparo of a 308GT4, Lamborghini Uracco and Maserati Merak. Fairly objective, although it was the earlier Lambo smaller engine. The later 250s and 300s I would think are more desirable. The Sillhouette and Jalpa (2 seaters compared to the 2+2 Uracco) follow ons really seemed to profit from development to where the Jalpa 3.5 had almost 260 hp. Although I do like the 2+2 aspect, if you think a Ferrari is small inside....
They are really pretty cars and I agree with you undervalued. Check out the site www.jalpa.ch as well as other lambo enthusiast sites linked from that one. Some of the web documented restoration pages really give a good feel for the car.
    Good luck and have fun

As far as how any group of car owners look, well, not sure any group is without extremes. :)

I agree with allanlambo, Ive heard great things about the Jalpa. It was a close call between a Jalpa and my Mondial last summer. The Mondial is a true convertible so that was tie breaker. However, if it comes down to a Uracco and a 308, go with the 308. You'll be laughing all the way to the bank otherwise. 308 might be a little too common, but its a much saffer bet.

Yes, I will find the links. Like I said, it was probably just the ones I ran across, but it struck me as funny and odd. I know someone locally with a pair of Diablos and he does not fit the image, so like I said, it is by no means all inclusive. :D

I know...that is why I qualified my statement like I did...it was just funny that the pics I was seeing were all a certain way. It was odd and funny. :D

I think they should just make a new main forum category, "Ferrari vs. Lamborghini" and put all these threads in it.

With 410 Jalpas made, you'd think they'd be worth something if they were any good. You and the above are the only people I've seen who has anything good to say about them (I don't mean the body style). They were said to be heavy, slow, don't handle worth a damn and of very poor build quality. And parts are very expensive; thus a poor choice in an old exotic.

I doubt any pre-Contach Lambo except the Miura is really anything anyone would want unless they were a total Lambo freak. Like you!

I nominate ryalex for most useful post suggestion of the year.

Inspired idea. It would certainly get more posts than some other sections.

The lamborghini urraco is rare. I don't think I've ever seen one in person. But I've seen lots of GT4's (including my own).

I think you will have a better time with parts, etc. if you get a GT4.

    I love my GT4.

    Good Luck,
    Dom

Alan, was that LM002 in the backgound of your Gallardo test drive on the market, or in for service?

Who's defending the Elan (I assume you mean the 1991, not the real ones)? It's not even respected among Lotus owners as what Colin intended cars to be.

Drive a real Elan or Europa sometime and you'll add it to your stable. Oh no, you like 0-60, not handling. Never mind.
