Is it rare for large electronics firms (say a PC or cell phone company) to buy licensing rights from an individual for a new technology? Do they even talk about such a deal or do they always do that sort of business with another existing company?

If you have the rights to a technology that they feel they would like to have in their portfolio, then I am sure they would at least take a look at what you have.

Needless to say, you should not approach them by yourself. Hire a competent intellectual property attorney who is experienced in negotiating licensing deals. You want to make sure that you are fully protected and that the entity that you wish to license to is kept in check during negotiations.

Also, a competent IP attorney can help you assess the value of your property so that you understand where to begin negotiations or even if negotiations are possible. An IP attorney may also look into what technologies are currently out there that are similar to yours such that a value for what you have can be established.
