Playing off a slot machine

    Over the weekend, I had breakfast at a local casino. I threw twenty bucks in a dollar slot (two bucks a pull) and lined up three double diamonds for a decent payout (and some IRS paperwork). After they paid me off, I played the machine next to the one I hit. Three guards stood behind me for five minutes. On of them came up to me and asked me to 'play the machine off'. I refused. He asked why. I told him I did not want to waste two dollars. He told me that was a casino rule. I then asked him for a dollar. He said he could not give me money. We argued for about five minutes and he called a floor manager. I still refused. The manager called a slot mechanic. The mechanic opened the machine and spun the wheels to a BAR-BLANK-BLANK.

    Casino's stance: Somebody can go up to that machine and say they just hit it.,,Uh hu. With all of the camera's and computer tabs on payouts, that would take some pretty big kahonie's!

    My stance: If that machine just gave a big payout, why should I play it off so somebody else can come up and loose their money, not knowing it just hit?

    It's not spending the two extra dollars. It's the fact that I feel (while I'm there), others should (probably) not play that machine and why in the hell should I waste money on a probable 'no-win pull!

    What would you do?

    I agree that you should not have to give up the $2.00, but the chances don't change despite the fact that you just hit a large payoff.

    I have never heard of this, seems pretty silly to me.

    was this in Sonora?? or there abouts? Never heard of this in Nevada casinos, but have in Indian..happened to a friend at Cache Creek.
    Different friend won in South Lake,and did same thing you did, someone else sat right down, and started playing as soon as they cleared the machine.

    My fiancee was a Slot Supervisor at Bally's>Hilton in Reno for 10.5 years. Here is her fact-based "stance":

    The fact is, when we came up to pay them their money for the win, we asked them: "to play the machine off."
    Sometimes, if that was their last 2 coins, then we, the supervisor(s), would open up the machine, get a coin, and we would put the coin in and have them pull the handle. This would simply clear the machine. If that coin paid off, then the customer got those winnings too.

    The term, "play it off" refers only to 1 pull. Over the 11 years I was in the Casino environment, everybody complied except the instances where no one had coins left.
    Basically, anyone can walk up to a machine, see that it has a "win" on it. Take coins in their hand, pretend to put them in the machine, and shout "Jackpot!"

    By "playing off" the machine that just won, with just 1 pull, this clears the Jackpot. If a casino slot manager is busy, and they do get busy paying off jackpots - they'll sometimes hurriedly pay the winner, and go off to the next one. That is the reason there's up to 12 Slot Managers on the floor of the largest and busiest casinos at the very busiest times. Again, if the Machine is not cleared, anybody can walk up to that machine and say "I've got a Jackpot!"

    When that happens, all hell breaks loose. A feisty liar - not you - a feisty liar will claim that which is not true and the Casino ends up having to get the Slot Manager, Slot Director and Slot Mechanic on the site of one machine which simply needed to be "played off" to begin with.

    That is why they asked you to play the machine off. Apparently, the Slot Supervisor was in a hurry and didn't do it then and there - instead, had security do it. But, yes - it is a rule.
