Love the M5. I recently acquired a 540ia M-Sport, which includes some of the M5 pieces (front/rear bumpers, rear lip spoiler, interior M badging and dead pedal. Dave
Thanks, Kenny. I love the car! It's such a huge step up from my last car in terms of perfomance and style that it's hard for me not to like it. Passengers tell me it rides a little rough (my boss used the words "log wagon"), but having driven several classic cars I don't think it's too bad. Problems? Yes, unfortunately. Not long after I got it the oil light came on and stayed on, even though the oil level was fine. Turns out I had a bad oil level sensor (about $250 with labor). Just recently I had the fuel pressure regulator go bad causing the car to run rich (VERY hard to start when warm), and a part on the front suspension broke (can't remember what it was off the top of my head). Not major problems, just annoying. I'm still happy with it.
Would you recommend staying away from that series of the C class for school? I really don't want to pay a premium for repairs for a car that'll sit out all day everyday..
That's a tough call. Nothing has ever gone wrong with the car that it couldn't be driven (the dealer found the suspension problem early). Basically up to this point nothing has failed except electronics. To anwer your question, I wouldn't rule out the W202 C class for a school car, but were I in school I probably wouldn't get an AMG. If I were you, I'd get a '99 C230 Kompressor sedan. You can get 'em in bright red, plus they have a great body kit that looks similar to mine. Kompressors hit 60 in about 8.1 seconds, only .1 slower than a C280 plus it's a much sportier car.
Well, ANOTHER reason I suggested the Kompressor is because it's got the easiest Benz engine to modify. Lots of hot parts out there for that motor, especially with the new C230K coupe becoming popular with tuners. You can improve on that 8.1, my friend!
Sorry to butt in, but after my experience with my 2004 CLK500, and my friends experience with a C320 Cab., as well as my friends 2000 S500, I wouldn't buy a Mercedes at all. What was I thinking? Check JD Powers to see what's left of that Mercedes reputation.
