I was in Scottsdale on business a few weeks ago, and to my surprise, I got a speeding ticket in the mail! I guess they clocked me with photoradar on Frank Lloyd Wright. The ticket says I can pay it by mail with a plead of 'no contest'. Does anyone know if it's worth fighting these things? I'm not sure how they'd prove it was me driving the rental car, but I also don't know the technology they use.

Do any of you locals have any experience with these?

    Welcome to Arizona :)

Just throw it in the trash and have a nice day. They cannot make a case of it without serving you in person. Scottsdale and PV have started hiring process servers to do this in town, but I would say it would be unlikely that they would send one out to Texas. Worse case scenario is that they serve you in Texas and you have to pay the ticket at that time.

Unless they serve you personally or you waive that right......they have nothing.

    ah, first post.

    A couple of questions...
    Were you speeding?
How much $ are we talking about?
I'm no expert at long-standing unpaid fines, but I would imagine that if you don't address this and were in AZ again and stopped for something.....hmm.

I admit I sometimes exceed the posted speed limit ;) , and if I'm caught I'll pay without a gripe ( or driving class, if available ). In several areas of Scottsdale and Mesa, photoradar is used regularly and there's usually plenty of indications its in use. Plus, if you're under 10 miles over you're good to go.

I'm aware of the arguments that one must be served in person but let's focus on what happens first. Someone is driving too fast for a given road and they get popped. I'm on the roads a LOT every day and many folks drive way too fast just to reach their destination 4 minutes earlier.

So, keep things in perspective. How does this ticket impact your life? Make your decision based on what's best for your peace of mind.

...or use it for a coaster for canned beer!

Photo radar is tax collection pure & simple. It is operated by private vendors who earn a piece of the revenue. Process servers eat into the take so it's rare for them to seek you out.
Without being served it's the same as never having been ticketed, so feel free to drive in Arizona anytime you feel like it. The photo ticket doesn't count until it is made legal by serving you in person.

What is relatively unknown is that unless they can make a 100% positive ID between the face in the picture and the driver's licence photo of the registered owner they won't bother to try and serve you. That also means that a car registered to a female name driven by a male is relatively immune as are cars registered to corporate names or trusts or partnerships. If you don't 'fess up and pay the chances are you will never be served. If you are an out of state driver, even less chance that you will ever hear from them again.

I have a photoradar plate and enjoy driving past all of those f#*('king photoradars.

The most I'll get is a nonmoving violation for $100+ dollar ticket if they want to pull me over.

You can pick up one on the internet for $40+ dollars.

    THEY WORK GREAT!!!!!

I'm delighted you got into karts. It's almost a let down to get into my 515HP 575 after blasting around two inches off the ground at insane (and neck stretching) velocities and G-forces.

    Hi Alex-
have watched the F1 races at your place b/f. :)
Just to add something to this. I have been served before and paid at that point. I personally do not want more points...and I already did the traffic school.
It is my understanding that these expire in 120 day period. The server tends to come around close to the expiry time frame. I live in a gated community and it still has not deterrred the processor. But if you can get out of it, under some circumstances (would like to keep my license and insurance reasonable) DO! Don't pay and wait. The fine is marginally more if and when you are served.
