I believe most F50s were targas, but could almost swear seeing a coupe or two.

    Anyone know the real deal?

And for weird trivia, has anyone noticed that the headlights for yellow F50s have a blackness to them that red F50s don't have?

    Kinda like that black edge!

Does anyone know why Ferrari did it this way? Also, was it only red f50s that had the body color around the lights?

Actually, ALL non-rosso F50's had black headlight surrounds. There are around 330 Rosso F50's, so it is the most common configuration by far.
The headlight units are sealed (like a 360's), so it is difficult to repaint body colour; but not impossible. Some F50's have had the headlights repainted to match the rest of the body colour. For example see the white F50 attached. The headlights had to be repainted as no white F50's were ever produced.

As noted, the F50 came with a hardtop to convert it from Barchetta configuration to closed coupe. This makes it unique amongst the "super" Ferrari series- 288 GTO, F40, F50, ENZO

Here is Nick Cage's F50 that was or is for sale.
Maybe it was originally yellow but, I doubt these pictures are p-shopped.

Well, I can't say that I have ever seen a Rosso with black headlights before.
The spare parts book lists the available headlight colours as:

Rosso Corsa- for "Rosso Corsa" car colour
Rosso Barchetta- for "Rosso Barchetta" car colour (Dark Red)
Nero- for Giallo Modena, Argento Nurburg and Nero car colours
    (Yellow,silver,black)

So no idea why Cage's car should have Nero headlights? Maybe he bought them through spares post delivery?

If you have the S/N of the Cage car, I may be able to check the original colour of it.

Ok, that is the one that was originally Rosso Corsa, then repainted non-standard Azzurro California (black headlights) and then painted back to Rosso Corsa. I guess it retained the black headlights at the time of the final repaint.
