I understand there were 1200 CS cars made for world-wide market, and I heard 353 to 360 CS cars came to USA (or maybe North America). Please offer correction if this is not accurate.

Does anyone know how many USA CS cars had the factory Racing Stripe option?

Or, do you know who to contact with this question?

Trivia: on my CS window sticker the option is called: THREE COLOURED RACING STIPE $5,479. (COLOURED is their spelling)

Racing Stripe in question shown next under.

The 353 (production of US version Challenge Stradale) number came from Ferrari Customer Care in response to an inquiry I made through the owners web site in August 2005. They ignored my request for a total world-wide production number. I only have anecdotal info from dealers about the percentage of buyers who ordered the stripe; maybe 20%?????

Assuming the 20% is a close number, then there are a disproportianate number of non-stripe models on the market vs. striped models. FML has 12, and only 1 has stripe. Ferrari marketplace had 7, none with stripe. Adjusting for overlap between FML and marketplace, the percentage could be closer to 10%. Either the 20% number is conservative, or those with stripe are holding on to their cars moreso than those without.

Yes that car is fantastic. Can I assume the same CDM on the Lotus board?

Hi Jodi, Yep same CDM. In the past, in addition to a bunch of Porsches, I briefly tracked a Honda S2000 (Red, of course) and a Lotus Elise (Red, of course).

I still am drawn to both of those cars and continually toy with the idea of getting one or the other again. I think a Red S2000 with a stripe similar to the Stardale would look cool. Instead of a Red and Green stripe, I would do a Red and Blue stripe within the white stripe.

Editing this post, I just realized, I could buy both a S2000 and Elise for about 1/2 the cost of a 1999 360 Modena. Hmmm, something to think about.

Jodi, I see you have a Boxster. I tracked one of those as well. Great car but my engine froze at 3,400 miles and I moved on. I'm sick that I sold my 1998 C2S. Silver/Black with all options and low/low miles. Tried to buy it back. No luck. The new buyer knew what he had.

Hey, wait a second, AM I HIJACKING MY OWN THREAD!!!!!!!!

Please, someone tell me how many USA Challenge Stradales have the factory option Racing Stripe. After-market decals don't count. There. We are back on point.

There is a master list of US CS cars floating around somewhere, not sure who keeps it updated - I have an old copy which has 356 VINs on it. It does have space for colors and stripe etc, but is very sparsly populated apart from the VINs. It has only 41 cars with the details filled in of which 4 have a stripe, so in that small sample its 10% or so. Anyone fancy calculating the 95% confidence range for no. with stripe from a sample of 41 out of 356 :) ?

I have the factory stripe on mine and I'm glad I do, even if it was as much as a nice second hand Miata all on its own.

I've attached the spreadsheet but its probably not much help. I though it might be of interest vs the 353 number that came from Ferrari.

How do you categorize an added OEM stripe applied under a full clearcoat ?

If you came out of Porsche Concours, you'll know IT MUST HAVE BEEN PUT ON BY THE ZUFFINITES, IN ZUFFENHOUSEN, or you won't be welcome at lunch.

If you came out of any rice machine (is it rice or Rice?) and you fail to lower, add double stripes and a straight pipe, you'll be shunned at the Arco AM-PM lunch stop.

If you came out of Corvettes, after-market stripes are OK, but only in conjunction with fender flames. More important is: If you used just one non-OEM screw from Pep Boys under a carpet deep in the bowels of the trunk , you'll be drummed out of the club.

If you came out of Lotus, you might get by with it, but only if you paint the wheels black, and BTW, they must be after-market wheels.

Jags and MG. It's really academic as they seldom venture beyond garage display. It's not the owners fault they won't run. Show some sympathy.

If you purchase a fiftyish 250 GTE and spend 2 million on a Scagletti or Bizzarinni rebody, that's fine, cool, no problem.

BUT DON'T F--K WITH MY STRADALE STRIPE.

In future, carrying a certified copy of your original window sticker showing the Racing Stripe will become mandatory.

PS My apologies if I failed to p-ss-off any particular motoring group. The omission was unintentional.

I've seen 14 different CS cars, 3 of them had a stripe and one of them had the fake stripe. Another thing to take into consideration is alot of the owners using fake stripes as they are removable and don't cost $5k.

I predict, down the road, the 2004 Challenge Stradale will have become a highly sought after collector car.

And furthermore, as the Brit politicians like to say, I predict an original OEM Racing Stripe will add substantial value to the price of the car. Even in 2006, I would only buy a CS with a stripe. Years hence, collectors will pay a big premium for striped cars. It is THE SIGNATURE of the car in terms of collecting.

As a collector car, like the Porsche 1973 RS, and only a few other lightweights, the limited edition Challenge Stradale with all options will hold good value over lesser CS cars.

I'm not real current on the '73 RS, but I think some cars go for 100K while others go for 200K. I'm told the optional Carrera decal is essential to bring all the money.

The CS, like the '73 RS, will take awhile for the great unwashed to realize how special this car is. I bought one, and didn't realize how special it is until I read the hardback brochure.

Yes, yes, I know. If there is a F430 CS, all bets are off.

Just to add some balance here, I find the stripe to be a hideous and cheap looking aftermarket type option. I was glad once I finally saw an anthracite one with no stripe. It's a beautiful and very fast car. Perhaps I'm silly but I don't like my women tattooed either. Now that I know how much this "option" costs it's pretty hilarious. To each his own I guess.
