I watched the video clip. Nice. I am now even more than before wanting to read the article on the 599. I think seeing the 599 next to the 550/575 and other Ferraris will give a better appreciation of the 599 design. Can't wait to see it in person. Thanks,
Don't mean to quibble, BUT The Ring is not the only race track in the world. The CGT is supposedly faster than the Enzo while being driven by Porsche's development driver. On Fifth Gear, with the same driver, same track, the Enzo was .8 seconds faster than the CGT. You can keep believing that EVO has always been objective, but I for one have found their objectivity highly compromised. As someone else noted, the PCOTY 430 car tested had badly worn tires. FYI - tires are the single most important element on any race car, just look at F1 results. I think the brilliance of the 599 will put things right, even for EVO.
I agree. The 599 is going to be a great performer. It may even win the next PCOTY--but to answer an earlier mush, my skull is not unduly thick. But spare me--I don't buy the dribble coming from the marketing cats in Maranello about the 599 being nearly as fast as an Enzo and nearly 2 secs faster than the 430 around Fiorano. Remember, Enzo himself "put" secs into his own test drivers' drives all the time. They have a car to sell and selling this car is job one at Ferrari right now. We'll see truth when Ferrari lets real world drivers test the cars in non controlled real world situations--again maybe the PCOTY?. Anyway, I'll say it again--I believe it'll be a great performer, esp for a GT. But, I drive a big front engined 12 all the time, a PCOTY/Car of Decade, for that matter. It has tremendous abilities and can pretty much stay with any 360 or even 430 in a short straight hammer. It can use torque to over come some issues as well. But, its heavy, long and takes a bit to get rolling so it simply can't brake/corner as well in stock form. The 599 is only 88k less than the 550/575 and is much, much longer. Yes, its got another 100 hp and its hp to engine size is among the best on the planet. But to count on it hanging in a real world test with a little fighter jet like the F430 is a big stretch for me. I'll have to see it, as noted above, to believe it. I also agree, the Ring is Not the only track in the world. But, its hard to quibble with its greatness or absolute ability to test a car's all around capabilty. Its near universally considered the most honest, strenuous test of a car's ability and it humbles drivers and cars still every day. Yes, I saw the Fifth Gear deal. I agree again, it was faster on this track, but you've got the "different day" argument, here too. I'll still hold to my position that the GT was very slightly faster on the Ring and any number of other tracks on any number of honest tests. But as I said, I haven't been in either car and can see the argument for both. It is, however, hard to fault EVO as "bias" just because they like the GT. It was my mistake DaytonaFan--I really meant the winner this year might be a 430 CS version not last year's F430 with bad tires. Possibly you know something about release information on a Pista but otherwise, the 599 will have to hold its own. BTW: Last year, I would have picked the 430 over the Ford GT--even though I've seen one work in person on a track at same time as a F430 and its a hell of car. It might even take the Ferrari in a 7 game series. But, as good as it looks and drives, I just happen like the 430 better. Guess I'm bias here . And, of course its fair for you to say bad tires on the F430 in last year's PCOTY. It was a non factory car owned by a regular joe and friend of the magazine. Lets be clear, I absolutely love Ferraris. But here's where it always gets me--just once in a discussion about the "best" performer re: PCOTY type test, I'd like not to hear some excuse for Ferrari not showing or "failing" to hold up against some supposed lesser mortal--I'll ask again, why is they never show with a factory preapred car for these things when nearly everyone else does year in/year out? To paraphrase that old line...."xxx talks, BS walks". ALMS, LeMans, Ring, IMSA. This is the land of true performance sports cars and Ferrari hasn't really held it own for some time. (Yes, I'm aware they spend their racing money on F1 but where's the factory support for privateers?) Anyway, that's precisely why I was so encouraged by its new 430 Challenge Car and its entry now being run in ALMS this year. It has a decent shot at knocking the GT3 RS out for the first time in YEARS. That's a fair, unbias test. But, factory testing on Fiorano ONLY is a bit of a homer for me. IMO, its past time for Ferrari to bring out its horses like all the other boys in the other global arena--PCOTY or the other performance mag tests. Let's see what really happens then. We'd have so much more to haggle about! . Enjoy....
I am not aware of any other "honest tests" on other tracks whewre the CGT won over the Enzo. Please provide details. Again, on the honest factor, where is the objectivity of having the man who developed the CGT at "the Ring" drive both cars on that track? Familiarity breeds confidence in pushing cars to their extremes. That gentleman logged thousands more (I assume)hours on the CGT than the Enzo. Thus that result is not at all unusual. The Fifth Gear test at least had the same driver and track, if not the same day. Additionally, the Fifth Gear track is much shorter than the Ring's and it would be shere speculation as to whether extra track length would stretch or reduce the CGT's deficit. And by the way, no one is questioning your love of Ferraris. We're just offering different points of view on very specific subjects. We are all biased in some way which is why I am looking to you top provide some facts behind your assertions.
I'm not suggesting i know this as a fact, but i generally don't take the time posted on top gear too much, don't really think they are that accurate. It is a "entertainment" tv car show after all.
Then what are youb referring to when you state that the CGT has proven faster then the Enzo? And yes, while Fifth Gear is an entertainment show, their test driver is a professional racer, and their contributors are the same people behind the magazine.
I also ment to add that in reading the reports of most if not all tests that has been done by US and English journals, the Enzo has always come out on top. This is not a coincident.
This thread is useless without said article soo I uploaded it for all to see http://www.coresworld.net/evomag/evo93ferrari599_01.jpg http://www.coresworld.net/evomag/evo93ferrari599_02.jpg http://www.coresworld.net/evomag/evo93ferrari599_03.jpg http://www.coresworld.net/evomag/evo93ferrari599_04.jpg http://www.coresworld.net/evomag/evo93ferrari599_05.jpg http://www.coresworld.net/evomag/evo93ferrari599_06.jpg http://www.coresworld.net/evomag/evo93ferrari599_07.jpg http://www.coresworld.net/evomag/evo93ferrari599_08.jpg http://www.coresworld.net/evomag/evo93ferrari599_09.jpg http://www.coresworld.net/evomag/evo93ferrari599_10.jpg http://www.coresworld.net/evomag/evo93ferrari599_11.jpg http://www.coresworld.net/evomag/evo93ferrari599_12.jpg http://www.coresworld.net/evomag/evo93ferrari599_13.jpg http://www.coresworld.net/evomag/evo93ferrari599_14.jpg http://www.coresworld.net/evomag/evo93ferrari599_15.jpg I have been buying EVO since issue 1(and b4 that as Performance Car) and while the Porsche has won many a eCOTY, up until this review the 550 was their car of the decade above all the other Porsches that ever won eCOTY. Lets not forget that they still give the 550 5 Stars
