Any hints on finding the Michelin TRX 240/55/VR415 tires for my '84 400i? Nobody near me can get them; I've found them at Coker Tires for ~$400 each plus shipping. YIKES! I only need two, but still that's pricy! What is everyone else doing?

Bend over and get ready to pay......thats all you can do, sorry.

Be very wary of buying used ones. If you do, get the date code first! You don't want to pay $250 each for tires that are 10 years old.

Not that it cost much less for the correct XWX tires, but I sure am glad my 1980 came with 15" wheels.

(400i Guy, I sure like the color of your car)

HOLY CRAP! With shipping and tax I'm at $929 for two new TRX tires. Oh, this isn't going to help relations with the wife! Can't wait to see what the tire shop charges for installation when I march in with two tires in my trunk.

I found that Discount tire had Michlein 220/390 for my mondial but did not even list 240s which is the stock size. (I know mine are 390s)

Rule #! when getting a tire shop to mount tires on your Ferrari rims......

Remove the center caps and LIE...tell them they are off of an old rusty piece of crap Fiat or something.

Actually, there IS another choice - for the same price as ONE set of TRX, you can buy a set of NEW 328 wheels from ferrari UK (~130 gbp each) or repro 308 wheels from rutlands, etc., a set of spacers from www.ferraripartsexchange.com (I got them on sale under $100 for four) and 16" tires from tire rack (~$100 / each) and NEVER have this problem again.

If you go with the repro 308 wheels it is 100% straight bolt on, even uses the same lug bolts. IF you go with the 328 wheels you need to fab a collar to hold the center cap on the front wheels - no biggie either (since the 328 wheels are designed for a different front wheel bearing). Other than that the 328 wheels are straight bolt on to. I went with the 328 wheels as i did not like the idea of reproductions. See pics below for them on the car, and note the front wheel collar thing we made to hold the center cap.

    Hope this helps,

    Alex

Please note that Coker gives a discount to Fchatters. There is a thread on Mondial TRX tires in the Mondial/308 forum and the guy at Coker made the offer. You need to contact him directly because only one guy at Coker deals with the Fchatter account. The discount is not huge, something like $50 a tire, but it's better than no discount!

glad to see someone has a brain around here...

I think it's safe to file the TRX boondoggle under "most heinous failures in automotive engineering ever"

Interesting opinion, however some of us still want our cars to be "correct and original." (No offense, ALEVENTHAL!) Although I've gotten a lot of suggestions about changing wheel sizes (on and off list) to something a little easier (and cheaper!) to get, I've decided to stick with the correct tires and wheels for the car.

    Cheers.

No offense taken, Brennan. In fact, it was the desire for (at least pseudo) originality that made me go with genuine Ferrari wheels (even if off a different model) instead of repros of aftermarket wheels.

It is worth noting, BTW, that aside from cost ride quality is way up and road noise way down with the new tires, while the rolling diameter and therefore speedo accuracy are both unchanged from the TRXs.

    Hmm. Interesting!

As long as I was there, I had them rebalance ALL of the tires and place the weights on the inside (all were on the outside before). One more gripe off my list...

Indeed the "Concours Correct" issue must come into play, but if you show and drive your car and need a "correct" wheel/tire for the car... get a set of TRXs that are used, keep them sealed up safe and tight until show time, and drive around on a set of 15s or 16s.... you'll spend less money and drive a better car in the meantime.

I sold the 22-year-old spare (couple hundred miles on it) 390mm TRX off of my 83 533i for $75 (IIRC).... that's a WORTHLESS USED TIRE... with shipping the guy was into it for more than $100...

most of these cars get driven... and I sincerely hope they get driven enough to use up the tires every 2-3 years... that said, dropping over $1500 on tires sporting 20-year-old technology just doesn't make sense.

It's not because my car is show quality (it's not), but because after 22 years it is still a perfectly original and unmolested example. One of few around that I know of. I see it as my duty to maintain that standard.

I will be in Monterey with my car in August, in case anyone from this forum will be there. My car is the one with the original dealer sticker from Monaco on it still.
