Saw this lovely car yesterday. I think it is a Ferrari 196S. It has a Dino engine and mechanicals. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
This is the 196S replica that was recently purchased by a fellow F-Chatter: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114223 http://www.ferraris-online.com/pages/carintro.php?reqcardir=FE-196S-142536
Check the link quickly. This will move from For Sale to Sold soon http://www.ferraris-online.com/pages/carintro.php?reqcardir=FE-196S-142536 Congrats, Shawn!
what does the s/n 142536 on sheehans website mean ? i dont think, the car is built on a modern ferrari-chassis! is that any kind of "official" vin ?
The chassis was built from scratch in Modena and I assume that this s/n was given to the car by the chassis builders at the time of construction, making it official. I beleive that another F-Chatter was involved in the original construction and can possibly shed more light on this. Hopefully he will chime in soon.
the chassis number isn't from fiat. i believe it has some meaning, but it isn't related to a real ferrari or a donor car.
i bought this car. after having driven for a good time on saturday, all i can say is WOW! clearly, it is a recreation. base don the information that we have, and it isn't much, the car was built sometime around the late 90's. it incorporates a dino drivetrain and a frame that was built like the older cars of the vintage of an original. however, it does have an independent rear suspension. the fit and finish of the car is unbelievable. in fact, it is far better than i ever expected. i had looked at a tr based replica at the keels and wheels auction here in houston, and the moment you saw it in person, the first though that came to mind was CHEESEY!!!!! it was so evident that this replica wasn't right. not that i expected to fool anyone, but if the lines look that "fake" and goofy, it simply isn't beautiful. this replica doesn't have that problem. as many can see, mike sheehan brokered the car and the details of the car and his research appear on his website. this isn't the first car i have bought from mike and i bought the car sight-unseen. it isn't common that cars of this caliper, regardless of it's replica status, come available. the car is what it is, a very good recreation of an original car. however, i feel that 0740, and not 0776, is a better car for which the basis of this car began. 0740 was destroyed and no longer exists. other than the plexi hood scoop on 0740, this car is nearly identical - including lhd- from all the photo's i have seen. clearly, i have never seen 0740 in person (as it doesn't exist anymore) or compared similar cars side-by-side, but it would be very difficult for someone not greatly familar with ferrari's to call this car out. i have no need to blow smoke or make it into something it isn't. i love dino's, and have posted frequently on the dino thread. i liked the idea of this car, and to top it off , it is based on a dino. sure, i have to believe an old clapped out fiat dino coupe supplied the engine, but the engine is a 246 engine. there aren't too many of those around. who ever built the body, did a damned good job. i don't expect to ever find out the "REAL" story about this car, as this car , along with all replicas, are shrouded in mystery. with copyright laws and fraud being on the horizon for anyone claiming it, i can understand why they wouldn't speak. that being said, whoever you are, this is an awesome car. i have no intention of parting with it soon. sadly for some, i have to ask, CAN YOU BUILD ME SOMETHING ELSE TOO?
That car is beautiful. Such simple but beautiful lines. Thanks for sharing pictures. Please post some more as well as additional driving impressions. It has got to be a gas to drive! cheers Ken
is this the car that used to be for sale at automobiles vanderveken, brussels/belgium? if so, i believe i can dig up some more pics of her together with some bizzarrini's if you're interested
No the car for sale at VDV-Grant has a black leather interior, but looks very similar, may be built in the same workshop in Modena...
It is this a sister car at a specialized classic car shop in Brussels. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Belgium is becoming replica-land...what a shame for the country of Gendebien, Ickx, Frère, Blaton, Pilette... Remember Antwerp ? http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=96090&highlight=antwerp The 196s there is still for sale at vdvgrant (correctly advertised as a replica) The one shown above is another, while the one of WSPeer is a third one, also coming from Belgium.
I have seen one @ http://www.mecanicimport.com/ I don't know witch one it was and I can't find a picture at their website. I saw the car over there when I visited the place a few years ago. I live nearby the speedfarm.
that's the one for sale at www.vdvgrant.be in Brussels, behind there is the famous bizzarinni p538 prototype alumium chassis #000 also for sale at vdvgrant, I saw that car at LeMans Classic in 2002, fantastic car, great sound with a chevrolet v8 engine.
here is the history of the car taken from www.ferraris-online.com : 1990s, late,, One of a series of about twelve 196 S replicas built in Modena by a small shop staffed by exScagliettiFantuzzi fabricators. Most are LHD with a few RHD. 2001, 67 Sept., entered in The National Classic Tour sponsored by Bentley. de Biolley and Gierst. Number 63. 2002, with Rodolphe de Boilley, Mecanic Import. when you go to the National Classic Tour website http://www.nationalclassic.be/ you will find the photo of this same car in the competition it is from this event that the side stickers and numbers come from. Image Unavailable, Please Login
All theses cars come from me I bought all of them in Modena and sold them in Europe or even USA Can delivery the last one for 120 000 euro
I wish I could have lingered on longer to take more pictures of this car. I had to run to help with the "Pin the tail on ..." event. I wanted to see the engine too. It is truly awesome in the flesh with fine lines and lots of interesting bits and pieces that grab the eye. It is also so low that makes regular 550s look like SUVs by comparison. sometimes in life, the most obvious answer is the correct one. after trying like hell to figure out the serial number and were it came from and what it means, i happened upon something today that caught my eye. symbolic just listed a beautiful dino coupe today on their website (4/17/08). one of the photo's is of the engine compartment of the car. i now know where the chassis number came from. i can't believe i hadn't noticed this before. it should have been the first thing to come to mind. doh!!!
