Great post Joe as this photo collection also shows the headlight "buckets" which are body colored for the Red cars only. All other colors feature the "buckets" in black. Was this a cost savings, time savings, combination of the two....I don't know Joe any ideas? Also, the blue car was later repainted red, but the headlights remained in black. I believe that car is currently for sale on the east coast.

PS looks like a 550, which came out in 1997,to the yellow F50 and the black E class came out in 1996 so it would appear a pretty old photo!

Erik I think the headlight buckets were always body color. I think the owners of these two cars had them refinished in black.

Also the blue car started life as a red car, then blue, then back to red...

PS I don't know who to believe Joe set the record straight! :) I do know after seeing two yellow F50's in the US both had black headlights. It is strange to think they were both painted...Appears the car in post #17 also has black headlight buckets...

I think that the F50 also has a gear display LCD spot on the dash. This was because the car was supposed to have the F1 style transmission, but for some reason it never made it into the car. The gear display did make it though to the right of the speedo needle...

Hmmm... you have a good point.

But consider this scenario: 12 cylinders right behind you, straight pipes, no roof so you can really hear it, great manual 'box, slicks = ready to rumble :-0

Information on headlights came from the F50 parts book. All covered in my thread plus photo's of the hardtop box and all the accessories etc, etc, etc. I am just about to update it with photos of the fuel bladder replacement.

The F50 was my favorite car for a long time; until the 360 Spider came along - and then the Enzo.

As far as I know, only three yellow F50s came to the US; two black. From what I understand - and I could very well be wrong - only four F50s left the factory liveried in black. Two of those are here in the states, and the other two are abroad.

Yellow F50s... One in Japan; one in Florida (Euro car, originally Rosso Barchetta); one new to France now here in the US; one in the northeast (first US yellow F50); one new to Italy; Brussels Auto Show car, new to Belgium; Ralph Lauren's former car (second yellow US F50); one in Switzerland; another European car; another in Germany that went to Spain; another, rumored to be in Japan; another in Italy; another in Europe; another in Italy; another in Germany; another - but where, I don't know; another in Italy; another in Italy that went to Japan; another in Germany that went to Belgium; another in Australia. Note that there are only two yellow US F50s mentioned in all of this - I don't know of the third US yellow F50.

I know the guy who owns the first 250 GTO (3223 GT); incidentally he also owns the first yellow US F50. Of all of his cars, he says those two will be the last to go. I don't know the extent of his collection, but I think he has one or two other cool cars. :)

Yes I had heard just 2 black USA F50s.

Your friend must be changing his mind. Last he told me the yellow prototype Miura SV 4758 (incidentally my former car!) would be the last to go... oh well.

I have a tiny little piece of that car...! :)

For some strange reason, he's matured over the years. He's thinned out his collection a bit over time as well - cut it about in half, I believe. When I was a kid, I didn't like vegetables; now I occasionally have a salad before dinner. Funny how that works.

He's smitten with the F50. Its performance consistency on both the road and the racetrack yield an overall fun factor that's far superior to most other cars. And when his hands are cold and dead, from them the medical examiner will experience considerable difficulty extracting the keys to 3223 GT. It is, as he so succinctly puts it, the baddest car on the planet. Those who own one are drivers at heart, and appreciate the GTO for what it did, and what it still does today. After spending years and years (and years and years and years) owning more cars than most of us could ever wish to drive, he's honed his lust and pursuit for the ultimate driving thrill. As time and experience have passed, I guess the Miura just didn't make the cut.

Well you cant really compare a Miura with a 250 GTO!

The F50 GT--is there any place one of these fine examples can be seen?
